About The Position

This position is for a Nuclear Radiation Protection Technician II or III at Oconee Nuclear Station. Depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate, the hiring manager may choose to fill the role at a higher level. Radiation Protection Technicians are responsible for ensuring the radiological protection of the workforce during both routine operations and post-accident conditions. This includes performing surveys, assessing radiation doses, and making sound decisions to maintain safety.

Requirements

  • Radiation Protection Technician II: Two year degree (Associate of Science) in radiation protection, or nuclear navy training, or equivalent education or training programs. A minimum of three years of experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Radiation Protection Technician II: Two years of experience in a radiation protection, chemistry or computer science career.
  • Radiation Protection Technician III: 2 yr. related associates degree or Navy Nuclear Power Program and ELT.
  • Radiation Protection Technician III: 1 year of experience in Radiation Protection / 1 year of technical related training.
  • Radiation Protection Technician III: 1 year of nuclear experience.
  • Willing to relocate to within 75 minutes of nuclear plant in order to meet requirements of Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Must obtain Nuclear Unescorted Access Authorization.
  • Respiratory physical.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Ability to meet RP essential job functions (climbing, lifting, pushing, pulling, ability to wear protective equipment, etc.).
  • This role requires the use of weight rated equipment, (Ladders, Harness, etc) with max ratings ranging from 275lbs to 325lbs, in order to meet the essential functions of the job.
  • Must possess all of the basic/required qualifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree from a college accredited by the Institute of Nuclear Power Operators (INPO).
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics or a related field.
  • Navy ELT Certified by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technicians.
  • Meets ANSI 3.1 requirements for a Power Reactor Radiation Protection Technician.
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated effective analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work.

Responsibilities

  • Perform surveys of rooms and plant areas to document and identify changing radiological conditions.
  • Perform radiological job coverage of maintenance and operations activities to ensure regulatory and procedural requirements are met.
  • Brief Radiation workers on radiological hazards of the work area.
  • Calculate air sample results and evaluate radiological conditions against procedures, to ensure expected conditions have not been exceeded.
  • Participate in Emergency planning drills, including response to contaminated injured workers, fission barrier degradation scenarios, and releases of radiological hazards to the environment.
  • Participate in the stations corrective action program, to identify and correct conditions in the plant.
  • Implement regulatory required programs, such as radioactive material/waste shipping, instrumentation calibrations and source checks, and dosimetry issuance.
