About The Position

Dominion Energy is seeking a summer 2027 intern for the Corporate Engineering Mechanics (EM) group at the Innsbrook Technical Center in Glen Allen, VA. The EM group supports Dominion's four nuclear power plant sites by ensuring piping and equipment meet code and regulatory requirements for structural support under various load conditions, including seismic. They also ensure mechanical and electrical equipment is designed and installed to perform as expected under all design loadings. The intern will work with subject matter experts on tasks such as preparing mathematical models for piping and support structures, reviewing in-service inspection findings against design codes (ASME Section III or XI) using fracture mechanics techniques, and documenting engineering analysis results.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic electrical theories and principles is required.
  • Must be able to follow instructions and be a team player.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Solid engineering skills, commensurate with grade level.
  • Good communication skills, technical writing skills, and computer skills.
  • An inquisitive nature, an ability to follow written and verbal directions, and strong professional ethics.
  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering in an ABET accredited program
  • Must have a graduation date in 2028 or 2029
  • Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Microsoft Office products is desired.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel with Macros is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of mathematical models utilizing PC-based computer codes or hand-calculation methods to qualify the piping and supporting structures for all applicable loading combinations, including seismic, thermal and fluid transient loading.
  • Review in-service inspection findings (i.e., thinned areas / weld flaws) against applicable design codes (ASME Section III or Section XI) to determine acceptability for continued service. This includes the use of fracture mechanics techniques as required for flaw evaluations.
  • Documenting results of engineering analyses in calculations and other engineering products.
