About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is seeking a nuclear facility electrical system engineer to ensure the operational readiness of DOE Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities. This role involves maintaining cognizance of assigned systems, providing engineering support for operations and maintenance, and technical support for safety responsibilities. The engineer will also support research and development projects, applying expertise to create innovative and compliant solutions. This position may offer a hybrid schedule, allowing for up to one day of remote work per week after a probationary period. The role can be filled at either a standard or senior level (SES.3) based on qualifications and experience.

Requirements

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent level of education and related technical experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable electrical engineering standards, codes, and practices, including NFPA, ANSI, IEEE, UL, and relevant DOE requirements.
  • Broad experience with and comprehensive level knowledge and skills in the design, modification, and evaluation of electrical systems for buildings and facilities.
  • Proficiency in developing or reviewing calculations, specifications, drawings, and sketches; determining design criteria for modifications, renovations, and upgrades.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively interact and collaborate in a team environment.
  • Proficiency and experience effectively developing work process documents and safety documentation.
  • Broad experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Broad experience delivering work products on budget and schedule, often with multiple parallel tasks requiring prioritization.
  • Previous experience with power distribution electrical systems and industry code compliance, including Department of Energy requirements for nuclear facilities (SES.3 level).
  • Advanced level knowledge of electrical engineering standards and practices, such as ASME, ANSI, NFPA, etc. (SES.3 level).
  • Significant experience with and advanced level knowledge and skills in the design, modification, and evaluation of power distribution electrical systems for buildings and facilities (SES.3 level).
  • Advanced knowledge of and significant experience in developing or reviewing calculations, specifications, drawings, and sketches; determining design criteria for modifications, renovations, and upgrades (SES.3 level).
  • Significant experience with and ability to successfully lead and motivate a team in achieving project objectives (SES.3 level).
  • Advanced communication, facilitation, and collaboration, interpersonal, and negotiation skills (SES.3 level).

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineering Registration in Electrical Engineering in California or reciprocity from another state within twelve months.
  • Significant experience working with structures, systems, and components in a nuclear environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) NFPA 70E, and other applicable electrical codes/standards (IEEE, UL standards).
  • Experience with medium and low voltage power distribution systems, backup/emergency power systems and asset-life extensions, and intricate modification projects.
  • Proficiency in power systems analysis and design software such as SKM or ETAP, or equivalent method, for fault calculations, load flow, protection coordination, arc flash hazard modeling, transient stability, reliability, harmonics, grounding, etc.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Creo).
  • Significant experience preparing project estimates.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the integrity and configuration of electrical systems to anticipate maintenance, repair, or replacement needs due to aging and degradation.
  • Prepare system logs, surveillance reports, and detailed assessment reports, and brief facility management on findings.
  • Identify, monitor, and recommend timely procurement and assurance of adequate spare parts and materials.
  • Provide engineering technical support for sustainment, repair, and modification of safety structures, systems, and components.
  • Support significant R&D projects by applying knowledge, skills, and innovation to create safe and compliant solutions.
  • Develop and implement solutions for problems of moderate complexity in support of facility operations and maintenance using independent engineering judgment.
  • Identify and assess potential impacts to assigned structures, systems, and components from new construction, modifications, and repairs.
  • Develop and perform technical reviews of facility-related procedures, work instructions, and proposed modifications for compliance and feasibility.
  • Prepare and review design calculations, drawings, and other documents.
  • Conduct reviews and provide technical input and advice to management, customers, and colleagues on system-related design, operation, and maintenance issues.
  • Independently monitor the integrity and configuration of electrical systems (SES.3 level).
  • Utilize advanced knowledge of technical engineering skills with complex systems (SES.3 level).
  • Develop and implement solutions for complex problems and issues (SES.3 level).
  • Lead and motivate a team in achieving project objectives (SES.3 level).
