About The Position

The University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for a full-time, open-rank tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Nuclear Engineering, beginning in September 2027. The university seeks collaborative scholars pursuing innovative, high-impact research in nuclear reactor engineering, especially advanced computational, experimental, data-driven, and AI/ML-enabled methods for reactor analysis, design, safety, and operation. Areas of interest include nuclear thermal-hydraulics and heat transfer; reactor physics; multiphysics and multiscale modeling and simulation; reactor safety; and reactor design and analysis. Applications to advanced fission or fusion reactor systems and emerging nuclear energy technologies are particularly encouraged. Other interests include high-fidelity and reduced-order modeling, uncertainty quantification, integration of experiments and modeling, digital engineering, advanced sensing and controls, and physics-informed hybrid modeling. The successful candidate will establish and sustain an externally funded research program, advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to collaborative research across the university. The position also requires a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring, including contributions to core and elective Nuclear Engineering courses, development of courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, and fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community. UMass Lowell’s Nuclear Engineering program is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering, which offers an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with a Nuclear Engineering Option. Interdisciplinary MS and PhD programs in Nuclear (Energy) Engineering bring together faculty and resources across the Francis College of Engineering and Kennedy College of Sciences. Related programs include Nuclear Physics, Radiological Sciences, and Medical Physics. The university’s Radiation Laboratory includes a 1-MW research reactor, 5.5-MV Van de Graaff accelerator, and radiochemistry and radiation measurement facilities. UMass Lowell is a Carnegie R1 research university located 25 miles northwest of Boston. It has more than 17,000 students and over $120 million in sponsored research annually. The position is full-time, benefited, and represented by the Massachusetts Society of Professors/MTA/NEA. The anticipated minimum salary is at least $115,000; the anticipated maximum is not expected to exceed $205,000 for a full Professor, depending on rank, qualifications, and departmental considerations. Application review begins November 15, 2026, and continues until the position is filled. Applicants must provide a CV, cover letter, teaching statement/philosophy, research statement, and names and contact information for three professional references.
