About The Position

This position will serve as both the North Wind After School and Farm Day Camp Director for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of St. Lawrence County. The North Wind Day Camp is located at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Farm in Canton, New York. The Camp Director will work closely with the Association Issue Leader and staff to ensure safe physical health conditions for all campers and staff and to manage safety and cleanliness standards of the Farm Day Camp. This position will serve as a key staff member and Day Camp Instructor, providing direct management of counselors and campers, and provides additional support in high-risk areas of camp. As the North Wind After School Director, the incumbent will provide comprehensive 4-H youth development opportunities for participants in the North Wind After School Program. This position will provide established guidance, supervision, and direction for program participants and after-school activities, including club and life skills, as well as assisting the collaborating teachers during the academic study portion of the program. This position will provide instruction utilizing established 4-H curriculum in the areas of environmental science and natural resources, science, technology engineering, art and math (STEAM). This position will utilize existing program resources and materials in program work, assimilate program lesson plans, utilize a variety of delivery methods and assist in delivering established innovative educational programs as assigned. The Site Director with hire, train, and manage staff and will be responsible for managing and maintaining daily schedule, records, attendance, rations and visitor records.

Requirements

NYS Department of Health requires a person in this role to be a minimum of 21 years of age.
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education (Associate’s Degree and two (2) years transferable/functional experience).
Experience relevant to the role of the position.
At least two (2) years of leadership experience in a program setting.
Must have current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications acceptable to the New York State Department of Health as a Camp Health Designee or the ability to obtain.
4-H Shooting Sports – Archery Certified or the ability to obtain.
Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
Ability to meet all School Age Child Care (SACC) and Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) licensing requirements (i.e. Tuberculosis Test, physical exam, training requirements).
Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position.
Must have efficient computer skills.
Desire to work in a camp environment that facilitates experiences with farm animals.
Ability to operate required technology including radios, phone, and computer software used for registrations, attendance, parental communication, and record keeping.
Ability to successfully complete the Farm Day Camp staff training.

Responsibilities

Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research - 80%
Utilize established program resources and materials in providing information and resources to program participants in established 4-H programming.
Teach a menu of existing educational programs and activities as defined in support of 4-H after-school programming efforts including, but not limited to: science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM).
Assist in the creation of lesson plans and in teaching innovative educational programs as assigned.
Provide established 4-H after-school educational programs via multi-media, as assigned.
Assist teachers, as needed, during the academic study portion of the program.
Via established program parameters, communicate and cooperate with school personnel to foster intentional instruction and to address the needs and interests of participating youth.
Implement program evaluation as designed by the Outside Evaluator and New York State Education Department (NYSED).
Interact with program participants to obtain evaluation data, to include evaluating effectiveness of classes within program areas for all After-School Programs offered.
Assist in the interpretation of evaluation data and in the communication of evaluation results to constituencies as assigned.
Help provide an atmosphere for developing good morale and wellbeing among the camp family.
Represent North Wind After School, Farm Day Camp, and Cornell Cooperative Extension in a professional manner to campers and their families, and to the public.
Accompany off camp trips when needed.
Prepare and teach classes and activities as assigned by the Issue Leader.
Support camper groups during the program.
Implement educational and enrichment activities based on the plan set by the Issue Leader and communicate any supply needs to the Issue Leader.
Administrative Responsibilities: Direction and Management - 10%
Monitor staff and students.
Responsible for managing daily schedule, records, attendance, rations and visitor records.
Monitor/evaluate after school and camp procedures, facilities, and conditions and suggest modifications that would promote more healthful conditions in camp.
Support staff by addressing any staffing issues, time-off requests, or conflicts and reporting them to the Issue Leader.
Identify potential hazards in the environment and take appropriate safety measures to ensure the well-being of children.
Work with Site Supervisors to ensure each participant has current and appropriate health forms on file.
Monitor the health of all staff and program participants.
Provide direct leadership and supervision of staff and program participants.
Support program participants with behavior problems.
Observe program participants behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
Observe and assess unsanitary or unhealthy conditions of the facility and advise Issue Leader.
Inspect facility daily.
Report any facility concerns, issues involving Extension staff, or schedule conflicts to the Issue Leader in a timely manner.
Provide management (including recruitment and selection) and supervision (including guidance, performance feedback and annual performance reviews) to designated staff in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocol, and provide regular staffing updates to the Issue Leader and/or Executive Director as required.
Coordination/Operation - 5%
Special projects for the site may include inventorying site resources, creating programmatic materials, and preparing for family literacy events.
Under the direction of the Issue Leader, coordinate and assist with program projects and program outreach efforts as instructed per already established program parameters.
Coordinate, compile and organize existing program resources and program materials.
Provide administrative assistance in the marketing and promotion of programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, and multi-media efforts.
Provide administrative assistance in the completion of reports as required by the funding sources and/or the Association.
Effectively communicate with parents of school districts as needed to achieve program goals.
Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
Work with the Issue Leader to implement a system for health screening for arriving program participants.
Prepare a summary and evaluation of the camp season including inventories, camper reports on health problems, and make recommendations for the following season.
Keep accident/incident reports that can be used for risk-management assessment.
File any accident/incident reports with the Issue Leader.
Ensure the daily schedule is followed and maintain smooth transitions throughout the program day.
Follow established and appropriate medical routines, including record keeping, in the daily medical log, accident/reports, and responding to emergencies.
Document clearly and accurately any reported incidents and care given as required by the St. Lawrence Child Care Council (OCFS) and NYS Department of Health, respectively.
Maintain and document mandatory safety drills and records in accordance with OCFS and NYS Department of Health requirements, including fire and evacuation drills, shelter-in-place drills, attendance records for children and staff, health checks, and visitor logs.
This position may require the transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources.
Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%
Participate in required trainings to meet School Age Child Care (SACC) and Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) licensing regulations.
Attend NYS 4-H Camp working group meetings and, training programs, and participate in staff meetings and required training events as scheduled.
In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Issue Leader jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.
Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
Conduct regular tours of the facility, identifying and addressing any safety concerns or hazards that could have an impact on the children’s well-being.
