About The Position

The Non-Ferrous (NF) Commercial Manager oversees all aspects of purchasing and inventory management of nonferrous metals for a specific region or geographical area. This role works in conjunction with Regional Accounts Managers, the Recycling Operations Director, General Managers, and the Buying Group to ensure efforts align with regional monthly forecasts or Buy Plans. The NF Commercial Manager collaborates with various teams on pricing strategies, inventory turns, quality, packaging, shipping, and processing techniques to maintain competitiveness and achieve desired outcomes in the nonferrous and alloys marketplace. A key focus is business growth through identifying new material sources and nurturing the existing supplier base. The incumbent directly manages the nonferrous and alloy business within their assigned region, including the buying of materials to meet the monthly Buy Plan.

Requirements

  • Seven to 10 years of scrap metal recycling industry experience required.
  • Experience at the yard level with the ability to properly identify and grade all grades of NF metals, ideally as a metals recycling buyer.
  • Must possess, or qualify for, a valid driver’s license for the state in which employment will be given.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Tact and ability to communicate with people at all levels, both orally and in writing, in a professional manner.
  • Excellent mathematical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Basic typing and 10-key skills.
  • Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; deal with problems involving several specific variables in or from standard situations.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety and Environmental standards are strictly adhered to.
  • Communicates and reinforces MRB’s position on scrap acceptance in line with Environmental, Health and Safety regulations.
  • Suggests and submits recommendations for improving safety and environmental conditions.
  • Encourages the reporting of any safety violations.
  • Provides a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
  • Works with Commercial Director and Regional Director to establish the volumes for the purchasing forecast or Buy Plan for the region or geographic area, including expected metal margin.
  • Meets the forecast and reports variances to Regional Management and the Centralized NF Sales Team.
  • Communicates and coordinates with the NF Sales team regarding current commodity pricing structure and market conditions.
  • Expeditiously communicates market information to key facility management personnel and Buyers.
  • Provides buying prices and market updates to all MRB NF facilities in their respective region, including daily conference calls with NF yards for pricing guidance.
  • Conducts weekly NF yard visits to monitor purchases, processing, and shipments, and identify areas for upgrade and quality improvement.
  • Identifies and buys a wide variety of NF and Alloys, assisting in regional buying to facilitate growth and contribute to the monthly forecast.
  • Manages the Order Position for the region through scale systems and spreadsheets, chronicling open sales and notifying the sales force of pertinent information.
  • Ensures material is sold, moved, and packaged as specified, and shipped within credit rules and regulations.
  • Reviews all accounts and supplier purchased material for profitability and positions the company to maximize metal margin without sacrificing inbound material.
  • Ensures buying and plant inspection personnel understand and adhere to specifications for received material.
  • Ensures assigned Buyers understand local and regional competition, their pricing structure, and supplier base, and discusses how this impacts the monthly Buy Plan execution.
  • Interacts with GM and Operational personnel when inbound material may affect plant operations.
  • Reviews NF position report, daily production transfers, inventory position, and maximizes spot purchases to fulfill orders or maximize NF sales.
  • Performs special projects as assigned by the Regional Director or Commercial Operations.
  • Assists the National Centralized Sales Team in special projects including buying guidelines cataloging and time and weight analysis.
  • Monitors and maintains exempt and/or hourly staff at cost-effective and competitive levels.
  • Monitors supervisory practices for self and direct reports to ensure compliance with HR policies and union contracts.
  • Reviews performance of direct reports.
  • Interviews prospective management and/or production employees.
  • Works with Human Resources personnel to prepare job descriptions.
  • Performs special projects or other duties as needed or assigned.
  • Supports the Company’s Internal Control process, understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls.
  • Suggests and makes modifications to policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business.
  • Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
  • Takes ownership and responsibility for ensuring all internal controls managed within the scope of this job position are being performed and signed off monthly through the internal control’s checklist.
