About The Position

The Sommer Lab is seeking a Non-Duke Student/Intern to support neuroscience research focused on anatomical studies of the rat and monkey brain. In this hands-on role, you will assist with experimental procedures, tissue processing, and data collection that contribute to understanding neural circuits. You will work closely with research staff to support surgeries, tissue preparation, and analysis using microscopy and histological techniques. Your work will help generate photomicrographs and quantitative data on neuron types across multiple brain regions.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in or recent completion of a relevant field (e.g., neuroscience, biology, psychology)
  • Ability to follow detailed research protocols and work in a lab environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Willingness to work with animal models (rats and monkeys), including assisting with surgeries and euthanasia
  • Ability to handle biological specimens and follow safety protocols

Nice To Haves

  • Prior lab or research experience
  • Exposure to microscopy, histology, or neuroscience
  • Interest in neuroanatomy and research
