About The Position

This is a 7on/7off Night Pharmacist position with hours from 9pm to 7:30am, Wednesday to Tuesday. The role requires hospital experience and a PGY1 is preferred. The pharmacist will provide leadership, clinical, educational, informational, and distribution functions on the night shift. Responsibilities include prioritizing workload, organizing the workflow of pharmacy technical personnel, and ensuring accuracy. The pharmacist may conduct in-service programs, act as a liaison between pharmacy services and other departments, and participate in committee meetings. Identifying and recommending improvements to clinical and distributive services, and proactively working to improve the medication process are key aspects of the role. Patient counseling on drug therapy, adverse effects, compliance, and appropriate use may also be required. The pharmacist will manage pharmacy operations on the night shift in the absence of a supervisor, coach and counsel staff, and participate in performance and competency assessments. They will also assure the appropriateness of medication orders, maintain patient profiles, prepare and dispense drug products, attend medical emergencies, and ensure compliance with drug distribution policies. Recommending alternatives for non-formulary requests and shortages, ensuring accuracy of records for controlled substances, and collecting patient-specific information for rational and safe therapy are also included. The pharmacist will identify and resolve medication-related problems, utilize nomograms and guidelines, and document pharmaceutical care activities. Professional development and staying current with trends are encouraged.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Eligible for Georgia Licensure.
  • Candidate is required to be licensed in Georgia prior to official start date.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification in accordance with the American Heart Association required within 90 days.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support required within 6 months, if directly applicable to practice specialty.
  • One year of hospital experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, clinical, educational, informational, and distribution functions on the night shift.
  • Prioritize the workload and organize the workflow of pharmacy technical personnel on the night shift, taking into account available resources.
  • Follow departmental procedures for checking the accuracy of pharmacy technical personnel in assigned areas.
  • Conduct in-service programs for medical, pharmacy and nursing staff.
  • Act as the liaison between pharmacy services and other departments and/or participate on committee meetings as a department representative.
  • Identify performance improvement opportunities and make recommendations of ways to improve clinical and distributive services.
  • Proactively work to improve the medication process.
  • Use effective patient education techniques to provide counseling to patients and caregivers including information on drug therapy, adverse effects, compliance, appropriate use, handling and drug administration.
  • Respond to questions from patients regarding their medications.
  • Identify the requester’s actual drug information need.
  • Employ a systematic, efficient, and thorough procedure of retrieving drug information.
  • Effectively manage pharmacy operations on the night shift in the absence of an on-site supervisor; seek assistance from management as appropriate.
  • Actively participate in employee performance and competency assessment.
  • Coach and counsel staff and document as required.
  • Assure the appropriateness of a medication order including age-specific and organ-specific factors, allergy checking, duplicate checking and drug interaction checking before preparing or permitting the distribution of the first dose.
  • Maintain the accuracy of patient profiles according to Emory Healthcares Policies and Procedures.
  • Utilize EMAR Summary to help with scheduling doses, avoiding duplicated doses and correctly initiating change in doses.
  • Prepare drug products using appropriate techniques and following the Emory Healthcares Policies and Procedures.
  • Dispense drug products in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Exercise skill as a team member in the management of medical emergencies by attending codes as assigned.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures related to drug distribution are followed.
  • Recommend appropriate alternatives related to non-formulary requests and shortages/recalls.
  • Ensure the accuracy of records pertaining to controlled substances, medication compounding, prepackaging, and sterile product preparation.
  • Collect and organize all patient-specific information (medication work-up) needed to assure rational, safe therapy for patients on assigned areas.
  • Identify the presence of medication therapy problems in patients current medication therapy; develop a plan to prevent or resolve the problem in collaboration with members of the healthcare team.
  • Utilize nomograms and other departmental guidelines when providing medication-related recommendations.
  • Document those pharmaceutical care activities which require documentation including adverse drug reactions, adverse drug events and interventions.
  • Write effective notes when documenting patient care in EeMR.
  • Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development.
  • Attends educational in-services as appropriate.
  • Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.
