About The Position

The Caldwell Zoo is seeking a 2nd Shift Night Zoo Keeper. This role is responsible for the daily care and maintenance of assigned animals and their exhibits, ensuring a safe and sanitary environment. The keeper will also interact with visitors, providing information about animals and zoo operations.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports.
  • Ability to speak effectively to visitors or employees of the zoo.
  • Ability to use common sense understanding to carry out instructions and effectively and safely apply animal and zoo operation knowledge to new changing situations.
  • Valid Texas Driver License.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear and taste or smell.
  • Must be capable of moving quickly.
  • Good hearing and vision are necessary.
  • Occasionally required to stack hay bales weighing in excess of 80 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BS) or equivalent from a four-year college or university in Biology or Animal Science related field preferred.
  • 1 year experience and/or training, or Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and disinfects animal enclosures and associated equipment and tools daily.
  • Checks exhibits and animal enclosures for cleanliness, safety, and structural soundness daily, addressing any existing or potential problems.
  • Maintains records of behavioral observations, veterinary treatments, diets, and animal transfers.
  • Carries out veterinary treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian.
  • Participates in behavioral enrichment activities, training, conditioning, capture, and restraint procedures.
  • Recognizes proper animal diets and identifies abnormalities in diets and feeding habits.
  • Responds to visitor questions about animals and zoo operations in a helpful, friendly, courteous, and informative manner.
  • Follows all safety policies and rules.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
