About The Position

University Safety student workers function as the "eyes and ears" of the Department of University Safety. They assist University Safety Officers and help maintain a safe campus environment by providing support in non-confrontational situations, completing patrols, and offering general assistance to students, staff, and visitors. The primary function is to provide support to the Department of University Safety by performing patrols, assisting with safety-related tasks, and maintaining a visible, helpful presence on campus to enhance the safety and service provided to the Saint Leo University community.

Requirements

  • Must be an ethical person with strong values of integrity and confidentiality

  • Strong work ethic
  • Must adhere to all Saint Leo University policies
  • Enrolled full-time at Saint Leo University as a junior or senior undergraduate student
  • Maintain a semester cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher

Responsibilities

  • Assists a University Safety Officer as needed in non-violent or non-confrontational circumstances.
  • Assists university staff, students, and visitors as needed or requested.
  • Completes door unlocks.
  • Performs ADA escorts.
  • Conducts foot patrols of campus.
  • Observes any violation of Florida State Statutes and University Regulations, and reports such observations to a University Safety Officer.
  • Assists with events such as Fall Family Festival, Spring Fling, sporting events, celebrations, and Commencement.
  • May be required to aid with dispatching duties, i.e., answering phones and operating the radio.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Display respect for their superior officers, subordinates, and associates.
  • Address subordinates, associates, supervisors, and members of the public courteously and will not use abusive, violent, insulting, or provoking language which could be deemed inappropriate to any person or group because of their ethnic or racial background.
  • Maintain an even disposition and remain calm, regardless of provocation, in executing their duties.
  • Will not gossip or speak about rumors detrimental to the department, other employees, or students.
  • Always display absolute honesty and cooperate fully with other employees to ensure maximum effectiveness.
  • Extend high degree of cooperation and coordination to partners and government agencies.
  • Will not use or attempt to use their position in the department for personal financial or social gain or advantage.
