About The Position

The Ann Arbor District Library is offering paid, practical experience for high school applicants looking to build their skills and knowledge in an exciting, fast-paced environment of library services. Applicants will also critically reflect on their experience with respect to professional training, career aspirations, and personal development. Applicants will work directly with a Mentor as well as work beside Library staff members. This internship is available to qualified applicants with relevant skills and interests. The internship will run from June 17th through August 13th (06/17/2026 - 08/13/2026). Interns must be entering their junior or senior year of high school, or first year of college after recently graduating from high school. Will be required to work evenings and weekend hours as part of the regular work schedule. The goal of this internship is to cultivate the next generation of library professionals and advocates. Under the supervision of their Mentor, the Intern will learn how libraries operate both behind the scenes and by giving direct customer service.

Requirements

  • Must be entering junior or senior year of high school, or first year of college after recently graduating from high school.
  • Ability to work successfully with diverse patrons of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
  • Positive attitude and approach to problem solving, customer service and public service.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organization and planning skills.
  • Maintains a prompt and reliable attendance record.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of Programming Materials: including, but not limited to, sorting, arranging, and packing supplies that will be used at future events.
  • Collection Maintenance: help in the removal of items currently in circulation identified by Library staff.
  • Event Support: provide support to Event Host during program including setting up, assisting patrons, and clean up.
  • Packaging of Summer Game Prize Orders: review orders, select requested items, and pack and scan orders to be sent out to the Library’s branches on a weekly basis.
  • Observation at Service Desks: will be given the opportunity to observe the service desk during regular business hours and ask staff questions about their work in serving the community.
  • Develop a connected learning project to be completed over the summer.
  • Spend dedicated time writing, reflecting, and sharing about their experience.
