About The Position
The News & Sports Reporter/Photographer researches, writes, and edits news, sports, and feature content for print and digital publications. The role covers assigned news, sports, community, and special events; develops relationships with sources and local organizations; and conducts interviews to gather accurate information. It also captures and edits photographs and video, writes accurate captions, and monitors local events and issues for story opportunities. The reporter manages multiple assignments and deadlines, helps produce special sections and other editorial projects, represents the company professionally, and supports distribution and other publication activities as needed. The position requires adherence to company policies, journalistic and ethical standards, safety requirements, and customer-service expectations, as well as participation in company initiatives. Frequent travel throughout the coverage area and work on evenings, weekends, or varied schedules may be required as coverage demands.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Strong writing, editing, interviewing, and proofreading skills.
- Working knowledge of AP style.
- Experience with photography and digital image management.
- Ability to gather information, verify facts, and produce accurate content under deadline pressure.
- Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with computers, content management systems, and standard business software applications.
- Demonstrated alignment with company core values and ESOP culture.
- Valid driver's license and compliance with company driving eligibility requirements, including proof of auto insurance.
- Ability to move equipment and materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
Nice To Haves
- Two years of newspaper, media, communications, or related experience preferred.
- Knowledge of current events, community issues, and local government activities preferred.
Responsibilities
- Research, write, and edit news, sports, and feature content for print and digital publications.
- Cover assigned news, sports, community, and special events.
- Develop and maintain relationships with sources, community contacts, and local organizations.
- Conduct interviews and gather accurate information for news and feature stories.
- Produce accurate, timely, and engaging content in accordance with AP style and company standards.
- Capture and edit photographs and video to support coverage.
- Write accurate captions and identify individuals, locations, and events represented in photographs.
- Monitor community events, local issues, and ongoing developments to identify story opportunities.
- Meet established deadlines while managing multiple assignments and priorities.
- Assist with the production of special sections, magazines, and other editorial projects as assigned.
- Represent the company professionally within the communities served.
- Adhere to company policies, journalistic standards, and ethical guidelines.
- Assist with newspaper distribution, insert delivery, and other publication support activities as needed.
- Maintain a commitment to internal and external customer service.
- Participate in the Great Game of Business and support company initiatives.
- Adhere to company safety standards, including workplace safety, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
