About The Position

Northeastern Global News (NGN), Northeastern University’s award-winning daily news organization, is seeking an experienced journalist and versatile storyteller for its Boston campus. The reporter will cover innovation across the university’s academic and research enterprise, including discoveries, experiential learning, human-interest stories, and campus life. The role particularly emphasizes data, AI, and science reporting, along with clear, engaging, deeply reported writing for a broad audience. The reporter will respond quickly to breaking news and provide timely commentary and analysis from faculty experts. The position requires strong news judgment, curiosity, accountability, creativity, accuracy, and the ability to meet daily deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Candidates should have experience working for commercial daily news organizations, interpreting academic studies and data, understanding scientific methodology, and translating complex information into accessible articles. The role is part of Northeastern’s Communications team in External Affairs and reports to NGN’s Executive Editor. The reporter will work with journalists and collaborate with media relations, social media, and multimedia teams. The position is based on the Boston campus and is fully onsite five days a week; remote and hybrid work are not options. After-hours work, including weekends and holidays, is routinely required.

Requirements

5–7 years of reporting experience with a commercial daily news organization, digital or print.
Demonstrated ability to cover data, AI, and science news with speed and accuracy.
Strong writing, interviewing, and source-building skills.
Excellent news judgment.
Experience interpreting public documents, filings, and data.
Ability to multitask, manage deadlines, and respond quickly to developing stories.
Experience analyzing complicated academic studies and data and translating them into deeply reported articles understandable to a wide audience.
Understanding of scientific methodology.
Commitment to fact-checking and the ability to file daily stories under tight deadlines.

Nice To Haves

Familiarity with digital publishing tools.
Experience with multimedia or video reporting.
Data journalism or basic visual storytelling skills.
Knowledge of SEO and audience engagement strategies.

Responsibilities

Report, write, and publish breaking news, daily stories, and enterprise features for a large audience using data.
Work with editors to refine pitches, shape coverage, and maintain high standards of accuracy.
Develop reliable sources and maintain strong relationships across the Northeastern community and relevant stakeholder groups.
Produce clear, engaging stories that are accessible to readers.
Collaborate with media relations, social media, and multimedia teams to enhance stories with data, graphics, photos, and video.
Monitor analytics and audience metrics to inform reporting and follow-up coverage.
Adhere to guidelines and fact-check thoroughly.
