About The Position

CBC Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking an experienced news editor/presenter to lead weekday morning newscasts for radio and digital platforms. This role involves an integral editorial and leadership function in gathering, preparing, and presenting daily news, ensuring audiences are informed about provincial events. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, high-pressure live news environment, embraces challenges, and is adept at chasing breaking news and updating newscasts under tight deadlines. A key aspect of this role is understanding and reflecting the diverse population of Newfoundland and Labrador, ensuring a broad range of perspectives, especially from underrepresented groups, are included. The position requires adherence to CBC journalistic standards for fairness, balance, accuracy, thoughtfulness, and immediacy. This is an on-site position, with typical weekday hours from 5:00 to 13:15.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment.
  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original story ideas.
  • Strong news judgment and a demonstrated ability to react quickly to breaking news and changing priorities, and chase multiple stories at once.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Engaging on-air presence, a strong presentation style and an ease with live, on-air work.
  • Ability to present material with credibility and authority in a range of situations including live events and breaking news.
  • Ability to quickly cut audio clips from a variety of audio and video sources.
  • Superior script writing and script editing skills.
  • An understanding of Newfoundland and Labrador’s political landscape, economic drivers and demographics, and a strong proven connection to the communities we serve in and around the province.
  • A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of four years of recent, related experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • Mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, line up and deliver newscasts and news breaks.
  • Collaborate with journalists across platforms and programs to chase breaking news and ensure newscasts are up-to-date.
  • Write and edit scripts; cut audio clips and package stories.
  • Conduct interviews on and off air.
  • Self-operate the studio audio board during live newscasts.
  • Vet scripts written by other journalists, providing feedback and coaching to help them develop their skills and produce content of the highest quality.
  • Present newscasts on other platforms (streaming, podcasts, digital, video) as required.
