About The Position

The New York Times Newsroom Operations team is looking for a news assistant to work on our International desk in a support role with varied tasks and responsibilities. You will be an engaged and collegial team member with an interest in news who is able to support reporters and editors across a range of logistical and operational responsibilities. Organization, flexibility and a desire to learn new skills are critical to success in this role. While reporting is not among the responsibilities of this position, writing skills and a passion for International-related news and Times journalism are a must, as our news assistant may be called upon to help with reporting from time to time in limited amounts for no additional compensation. The amount of reporting and rewriting a News Assistant is permitted to perform without additional compensation shall result in the publication of no more than 1500 words in any given month, absent a bona fide news emergency. This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office a minimum of four days each week.

Requirements

  • 1+ years experience with Google Workspace
  • 1+ years experience in a role requiring operational skills
  • Experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Versatile skills in writing including strong grammar

Responsibilities

  • Internal document creation and maintenance, i.e. trackers, desk contact lists/whereabouts, airtables, Google production calendars, etc.
  • Attend daily meetings and take notes that will then be shared with the department
  • Ensure smooth communication between editors, reporters, photographers and freelancers
  • Eagerly tackle new responsibilities as the need arises (i.e. assist with breaking news coverage)
  • Proofread and fact-check audience-related tasks, i.e. SEO and URL verification
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our values of journalistic independence and exhibit a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • Handle large-scale printing and scanning of documents, scripts, and reports
  • Assemble binders and packets of materials for meetings
  • Occasionally run errands, including picking up supplies, as needed
  • Coordinate the mailing, shipping, and delivery of sensitive documents and materials, domestically and internationally
  • Screen and sort other mail, send out newspapers
  • Help set up and break down team events
