About The Position

The Oregon State Public Health Laboratory, Newborn Screening Section, located in Hillsboro, Oregon has a career opportunity for a Newborn Screening Follow-Up Office Specialist (Office Specialist 2) to ensure timely reporting and appropriate follow-up of newborn screening test results, according to established procedures. The Oregon State Public Health Laboratory (OSPHL) has been actively protecting the public's health since 1903 by supporting state and local infectious disease control efforts, preventing metabolic disorders detectable at birth, and assuring the quality of testing in clinical and environmental laboratories.

Requirements

  • Two years of secretarial or basic administrative support experience that includes records processing, generating documents, and gathering and sorting data.
  • An associate degree in general office occupations and one year of experience with records processing, generating documents, and gathering and sorting data.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be available to work on Saturdays after training is complete.
  • Must be available to work during inclement weather or other hazardous conditions.
  • Must complete I-9 documentation and confirm authorization to work in the United States within three days of hire.
  • Must meet OHA criteria for a criminal records check at the time of hire and throughout employment.

  • Experience working with co-workers and diverse levels of professionals within both an office setting as well as a laboratory.
  • Advanced skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, the internet, and computer troubleshooting.
  • Strong verbal communication skills as this position may involve significant phone time with medical staff.
  • Experience working in an environment that requires a high level of flexibility to achieve a common goal.
  • Experience with data entry (including a typing speed greater than 60 wpm).
  • Strong attention to detail characterized by traits such as accuracy, thoroughness, organization and analytical thinking.
  • Experience creating, promoting, welcoming, and maintaining a culturally competent and diverse work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure timely reporting and appropriate follow-up of newborn screening test results, according to established procedures.
  • Extensive computer use, often for long hours and eventually regular phone use.
  • Work on Saturdays after training is complete.
  • May be required to work during inclement weather or other hazardous conditions.
