About The Position

The Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES is seeking an engaging, student-centered educator to lead our New Visions: Medical Professions program. This unique program allows motivated, college-bound high school seniors to explore careers in medicine and the life sciences through rigorous classroom instruction, clinical rotations, and hands-on experiences in healthcare settings. Working in cooperation with Auburn Community Hospital and other regional healthcare partners, the teacher will help students connect academic learning with real-world medical professions. This is an exciting opportunity for an educator or healthcare professional who is passionate about preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Requirements

  • Candidates must possess or be eligible for one of the following New York State certifications: Biology 7–12, Health Education, Transitional A certification in Practical Nursing or Medical Assisting.
  • Knowledge of healthcare careers, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, or related life sciences.
  • The ability to develop engaging and academically rigorous learning experiences.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to coordinate learning experiences across multiple healthcare and community settings.
  • The ability to work collaboratively while managing the day-to-day responsibilities of a highly independent program.

Nice To Haves

  • A background in medicine, healthcare, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Industry professionals who may be eligible for an alternative certification pathway are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver an engaging curriculum that introduces students to a broad range of healthcare careers and specialties.
  • Provide instruction in Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, healthcare career exploration, and related academic content.
  • Coordinate and facilitate clinical rotations, job-shadowing opportunities, guest presentations, and other hands-on learning experiences.
  • Prepare students to participate successfully in professional healthcare environments by emphasizing safety, ethics, confidentiality, teamwork, communication, and professionalism.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with Auburn Community Hospital, healthcare providers, community organizations, and other program partners.
  • Help students explore healthcare career pathways and prepare for college and other postsecondary opportunities.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to support student engagement and diverse learning needs.
  • Assess student learning and maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and progress.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, school counselors, component districts, and program partners.
  • Participate in professional development, departmental activities, and other responsibilities associated with the position.
