The Neurosurgical Advanced Practice Professional (APP) is a physician-dependent practitioner responsible for the medical and surgical management of patients admitted to the Neurosurgery Service under the supervision of the attending Neurosurgeon. The APP performs advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks related to neurosurgery patients from the Emergency Room phase through their admission, including in the OR as necessary. Responsibilities include performing History and Physical examinations, admission notes, daily progress notes, admission and routine orders, daily rounds, consultation notes, ED consult notes, and attending relevant meetings. The role requires managing patient care in the ED, dictating medical documentation, communicating with the OR scheduler, potentially assisting in the OR, and daily contact with the on-call Neurosurgeon. The APP will also expedite patient disposition by identifying family needs, provide pre- and post-operative patient education, respond to telephone inquiries from discharged patients, communicate with referring physicians, and manage inpatients including monitoring progress, ordering tests, assessing patients, developing treatment plans, and executing discharge activities. The role also involves exercising physician-delegated prescriptive authority and attending CME seminars to maintain licensure.
