About The Position

We are seeking a highly driven Network Engineer to join our Network Operations Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, dimensioning, building, and testing the network infrastructure used for service delivery to our residential and business customers. The Network Engineer is expected to be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) with a thorough understanding of the latest industry trends and best practices related to network technology.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field or an equivalent training.
  • Possession of one or more approved information technology certificates and/or completion of other approved technology-related training may substitute for some or all the required education.
  • 3-5-years’ experience in an ISP or MSO environment with excellent knowledge and experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining network infrastructure.
  • At least one of the following professional certifications or a designation deemed equivalent by CFOC management.
  • Cisco CCNA or CCNP Service Provider
  • Juniper JNCIA-Junos, JNCIP-SP or JNCIS-SP
  • Any FTTX certifications/trainings
  • MEF-CECP or MEF-SDCP
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Good diagnostic, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Willing to be available for emergency services as required.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Excellent understanding of the technical fundamentals of the internet and IP Protocols including but not limited to: Ethernet, VLANs, Spanning Tree, LACP, MLAG, IPv4, IPv6, ICMP, ICMPv6, TCP, UDP, OSPF, EGP, BGP, IGRP, RIP, ISIS, VRF, MPLS, VPLS, IP Multicast – SSM, IGMPv3, PIMv2, VXLAN Bridging and Routing, MPLS VLL, DHCP, DNS, TFTP, SNMP
  • Good understanding and knowledge of last mile access technologies (XGSPON, GPON etc.)
  • Good understanding of fiber transport technologies (WDM, Coherent optics etc.)
  • Excellent knowledge of routing, switching, etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of MS-Visio, Lucid Chart, or other diagram software/solution
  • Excellent knowledge of scripting language for task automation (PHP, Perl, Python etc.)
  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Perform efficient network utilization monitoring for timely expansion planning.
  • Propose timely network expansion to address capacity growth.
  • Work closely with Operations team to address capacity augmentation as needed.
  • Lead the design and implementation activities for network upgrade projects.
  • Perform product evaluations and proof of concept testing for new products to be used in the network.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed network level architecture documentation (diagrams, processes, and procedures).
  • Stay informed of current and upcoming technologies to appropriately support Canadian Fiber Optics Corporation (CFOC) needs.
  • Work closely with Sr. Network Analyst for developing, maintaining, and implementing network disaster recovery strategies including risk assessment for the network infrastructure.
  • Analyze and document existing single point of failures in the network and build redundancies to overcome that limitation.
  • Work closely with the leadership and Sr. Network Analysts for implementation of business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
  • Test documented business continuity strategies and plans.
  • Keep in touch with market for services CFOC offers and identify creative or otherwise business opportunities to management.
  • Help create technical solutions to business problems or challenges related to service delivery.
  • Help reduce costs related to the service delivery to stay competitive.
  • Ensure all required software upgrades are applied to the network elements (routers, switches, firewalls, OLTs, ONTs, wireless gateways etc.) timely after proper testing and documentation.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of security issues in network areas and cascade this information to others.
  • Ensure network security best practices are in place for network infrastructure.
  • Define configuration templates to ensure uniformity of device configuration.
  • Ensure appropriate version control/backups exist for the network device configurations.
  • Maintain documentation that is updated regularly and stored centrally for easy access. It should include network documents (diagrams, processes, as-builts etc.) and requisite information necessary to rebuild services when needed.
  • Ensure that the network systems have automated monitoring that can identify problems as proactively as feasible.
  • Escalate all network and service issues to management and/or vendors appropriately.
  • Lead the implementation for the delivery of network projects and business customer circuits.
  • Work closely with vendors and use appropriate escalation to assist with timely network troubleshooting when needed.
  • Perform network audits to review and improve configuration using industry’s best practices.
  • Identify and recommend changes to improve network performance, security, and reliability.
  • Plan and coordinate all changes to network systems and services according to established change management procedures.
  • Prepare required documentation (MOP, Test Plan, Reason for Change, Post change updates etc.) as needed.
  • Responsible for timely service delivery and availability.
  • Review and coordinate on approved changes requests submitted by other departments.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders on changes that impact multiple departments/groups.
  • Work closely with customer service groups for timely resolution of complex customer issues.
  • Work closely with vendor technical teams for testing and certification of new products.
  • Maintain an ethical, positive, and professional image in all dealings with CFOC external clients and internal partners.
  • Respond to client inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Conduct technical presentations to existing and prospective customers as required.
  • Provide Tier 2/3 support for internal and external customers when needed.
  • Consult with users and evaluate requirements, recommend designs, provide cost analyses, plan projects, and coordinate tasks for installation of services.
  • Analyze and resolve technical problems for established systems and services.
  • Ensure all trouble tickets/calls are tracked via ticketing system.
  • Report on weekly activity showing progress on tasks, and major projects.
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings.
  • Track all network issues in ticketing system.
  • Maintain status for all active projects and activities in a project management system.
  • Provide training as required to CFOC staff, and external customers.
  • Achieve and maintain professional certifications and trainings as required.
  • Provide training to fellow team members covering a high-level overview of the operations of network systems as well as day-to-day operational matters such that they can provide basic network support when needed.
  • React to change productively and handle other duties as assigned.
  • Work cooperatively with other departments to coordinate support and escalation.
  • Maintain the departmental inventory of tools supplied by CFOC and use these tools in the appropriate manner to achieve the tasks required.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly vehicle with associated equipment and stock inventory.
  • Ensure security of the CFOC vehicle provided.
