About The Position

The Core Networking team is looking for a Sr. Network Development Manager to join our Network Fabric Engineering (NFE) team. As a Network Development Manager, you will be responsible for managing teams that build, deploy and scale the Amazon networks that support AWS, customers, and other business units, across multiple global datacenters. AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. As part of this Network Development Manager role, a successful candidate will be responsible for managing one of our global teams aligned with one of our network fabrics. Direct reports will include Network Development Engineers, who own design and optimization of the future state of the global Amazon network. The Topology team is expected to identify optimal and efficient designs to manage traffic flows, failure scenarios and optimal capacity. The team is also responsible for deep-dive and root-cause analysis of events, which impact our customers ensuring that we improve our processes and designs in order to avoid customer impact in the future. AWS leaders are highly-technical and understand their environment to accurately represent operational issues and exercise high judgment during high severity events. As the manager of one of our Topology teams, successful candidates will be responsible for setting and delivering on the strategic vision for the team. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or above in computer science or equivalent
  • 5+ years of engineering experience
  • 5+ years people management experience or relevant leadership experience, managing a team of 8+ individual contributors.
  • 3+ years of past experience with network engineering either as a manager or individual contributor.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience presenting root cause analysis and error correction from operational events to senior management.
  • Working knowledge and experience of developing operational metrics.
  • Working knowledge of Networking (TCP/IP, Routing/Switching & Troubleshooting).
  • Linux experience, the ability to script in Python, Perl or shell, and demonstrated experience automating and managing networks with software.
  • Experience representing your team/technical area to senior management.
  • Experience contributing to the creation and implementation of high quality, high volume recruiting plans.

Responsibilities

  • Drive operational excellence, including creating processes and procedures to improve efficiency in day-to-day tasks and projects.
  • Drive standards across the network and ensure compliance with those standards and policies.
  • Work closely with supporting internal customers to ensure their needs and issues are addressed.
  • Drive quality into metrics for network issues, capacity, vendor equipment/failures analysis, and network performance.
  • Own all facets of performance and career management for the team, including regular one-on-one meetings.
  • Provide technical and soft skill mentoring to maintain a well-rounded, world-class organization.
  • Oversee project management, quality audits, and coordination of training sessions.
  • Provide day-to-day oversight of the team, including scheduling of an 8x7x365 operational rota.
  • Develop and improve incident and change management within the Networking space.
  • Drive initiatives for improvements to existing tools & processes and provide feedback on new practices & procedures.
  • Lead hiring quality personnel to fit current needs and allow for team scaling.
  • Coordinate with recruiting staff to evaluate candidates, participate in phone screens, and provide feedback during interviews.
  • Ensure proper training takes place for all new hires.
  • Analyze day-to-day operations to identify new automation opportunities.
  • Assist software teams in Networking to understand requirements and drive roadmaps for network engineers to create automation tasks.
  • Define and deliver strategic goals for the team and the wider Topology team.
  • Communicate goals to the team, align necessary resources, and communicate status to the wider leadership team.
  • Manage customers during problem resolution and operate efficiently under pressure.
  • Travel to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed.
