Network Design Intern (Fall 2026, 4 months)

About The Position

This internship offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in network design within a global leader driving digital transformation and innovation. The intern will assist with multiple project activities, including script development, KPI updates, and task/process automation. This role provides a chance to be trained for future roles within the department and contribute to a sustainable future.

Requirements

  • Working towards a Bachelor's or Master's degree in System, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a similar field.
  • Knowledge of network principles and technologies, including Ethernet/IP-based networking (switching/routing protocols), redundancy and high-availability technologies, network/IT services, MPLS and VPN technologies, and RF networking (802.11, LTE).
  • Knowledge/Experience in Programming/Scripting (Python, C, C++, Java script, Pearl, Shell script).
  • Fluent in English (written and oral communication skills).
  • Able to work full-time (40 hours) for the agreed work term.
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 2 days (16 hours) in the Toronto office.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of rail signalling and CBTC.
  • Familiarity with specification-driven network design as it applies to computer systems with both hardware and software operation.

Responsibilities

  • Convert customer requirements into conceptual designs and prepare associated documentation by performing operational analyses, simulations, and technical trade-off studies.
  • Evaluate alternative design configurations and functional features, creating new concepts or modifying existing ones to fulfill customer requirements.
  • Create and document detailed network designs implementing requirements.
  • Deploy solutions in the lab and support testing activities.
  • Participate in technical reviews of component designs, installations, and vendor selection/qualification.
  • Provide support for field issues.
  • Prepare and support bids and proposals, including customer requirements compliance assessment, gap analysis, architecture design, simulation, trade-off of key features, and estimation.
  • Present technical designs and reports to customers and/or other engineering/management groups.
  • Interface and build working relationships with Software, Hardware, and Testing groups to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in-house and field test issues.
  • Accurately report work progress and estimates to complete assigned work.
