About The Position

This position is open to Alaska Residents only. The Network and Telecommunications Specialist will play a key role in maintaining and improving essential statewide communication systems. This role involves designing and supporting connectivity by planning, implementing, and maintaining converged telecommunications voice and data networks that serve agencies across Alaska. The specialist will apply Cisco expertise to ensure reliable operation of routers, switches, and related systems, and maintain network health by monitoring performance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the stability and security of the state’s network. Additionally, the role includes evaluating new tools and solutions to meet Alaska’s unique geographic and operational needs, and contributing to enhancing the quality and reliability of telecom services statewide.

Requirements

Knowledge of methods, tools, and procedures for information systems/network security, including developing information security plans.

Knowledge of procedures for developing technical and operational support documentation.
Competencies in Configuration Management: Knowledge of the principles and methods for planning or managing the implementation, update, or integration of information systems components.
Competencies in Learning: Uses efficient learning techniques to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills; uses training, feedback, or other opportunities for self-learning and development.
Competencies in Network Management: Knowledge of the operation, management, and maintenance of network and telecommunication systems and linked systems and peripherals.
Competencies in Technical Problem Solving: Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes, and identifies system malfunctions to determine the source and cause of the problem.
For Specialist 2: Competencies in Infrastructure Design: Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software.
For Specialist 2: Competencies in Telecommunications: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of transmissions, broadcasting, switching, control, construction, or operation of telecommunications systems.
For Specialist 2: Professional experience supporting and maintaining networks and installing routers, switches, firewalls, and network-related software.
Training in computer science, information technology, computer engineering, or a similar field.
Experience in monitoring networks, documenting network problems, and providing technical support to network users.
Must be an Alaska Resident.
