About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Senior Director of Information Technology Systems and Senior DevOps & Infrastructure Technical Lead, the Network Administrator (Level 2 Support) provides escalated technical support for the university's wired and wireless network infrastructure. This role resolves network and connectivity issues escalated from the IT Service Desk (Level 1 Support), performs routine network hardware and software maintenance, and assists with monitoring network performance, reliability, and security across campus and residence facilities. The Network Administrator works closely with the IT Service Desk team to troubleshoot escalated tickets, supports wireless connectivity for students, faculty, and staff, and helps maintain accurate documentation of network devices, configurations, and inventory. This role assists with the implementation of network security protocols and participates in network and cybersecurity planning under the direction of the Network Manager or Senior Director of Information Technology Systems. Working within established policies and procedures, this position performs network and computer hardware/software installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting with minimal to moderate supervision, escalating complex or unresolved issues to the Network Manager or Senior Director of Information Technology Systems. This position combines hands-on technical support with routine network administration responsibilities and includes project role outs for new/upgraded IT network hardware and software.

Requirements

  • An associate's degree in MIS, Computer Science, or a related field (a combination of network certifications, relevant experience, and training may be substituted for the degree, i.e. CompTia A+, Network+, Security+).
  • Two (2) years of experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting network and computer hardware and software.
  • Experience in an educational setting preferred.
  • A good working knowledge of networking concepts and technical competence, along with the ability to interact positively with students, faculty, and staff who possess a wide range of educational and technical backgrounds.
  • Ability to work within established policies with general supervision is essential.
  • Strong communication skills and a customer-oriented approach are required.
  • Broad knowledge of network technology, including LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, and Wi-Fi standards.
  • Working knowledge of Cisco networking equipment, hardware, and software required.
  • Knowledge of Active Directory and Windows Server is helpful.
  • Familiarity with Palo Alto firewalls and VPNs is preferred.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA) are desirable.
  • This position requires the ability to traverse the campus, stoop, bend, and climb stairs to access network equipment in various locations.
  • Must be able to lift approximately 10-20 pounds, have finger dexterity for keyboard and equipment use, and possess excellent motor skills.
  • Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.
  • Forty hours per week (M-F) will be the general rule.
  • Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and have a varying schedule when required.

  • Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner.

Responsibilities

  • Supports campus-wide network performance, reliability, and security, escalating complex or unresolved issues to the Senior Director of Information Technology Systems and Senior DevOps & Infrastructure Technical Lead.
  • Performs routine network hardware and software maintenance, including configuration backups, patches, and security updates.
  • Identifies network problems, determines root causes, and implements resolutions within the scope of the position.
  • Helps ensure the uninterrupted function of essential networking services and equipment across campus and residence facilities.
  • Provides second-tier (Level 2) technical support for network-related help desk tickets escalated from Level 1 Service Desk staff.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves wired network port and connectivity issues for staff, faculty, and students.
  • Mentors and provides guidance to Level 1 Service Desk staff on network-related troubleshooting techniques.
  • Documents ticket resolutions and maintains accurate records within the ticketing system.
  • Installs and maintains wireless access points, antennas, and related hardware and software for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Monitors and troubleshoots wireless connectivity issues across campus.
  • Creates and maintains a database and inventory of installed wireless devices.
  • Assists in implementing and maintaining network security protocols, including endpoint protection and access controls.
  • Participates in network planning and cybersecurity planning activities under the direction of the Network Manager or Senior Director of Information Technology Systems.
  • Supports backup and disaster recovery procedures for network systems.
  • Maintains inventory of network equipment and orders supplies and repair or replacement parts as needed.
  • Works with vendors to ensure network components are appropriate, assisting with installation and configuration when required.
  • Assists with tracking warranties, licenses, and maintenance agreements for network hardware and software.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Information Technology Systems and Senior DevOps & Infrastructure Technical Lead.
