About The Position

As Network & System administrator you will join a dynamic team of technology innovators, providing operational and strategic support and planning for multiple networks, local and contracted virtual infrastructure and a burgeoning cloud and contracted services portfolio. Working closely with both internal and external partners you will ensure that KPE networks and services are robust, reliable and responsive to the changing needs of an ever-growing Faculty. Key responsibilities also include infrastructure planning and service improvement, recommending and implementing upgrades and changes, coordinating planned changes with technical staff and stakeholders, and providing advanced technical support and consultation to ensure reliable connectivity to University and Faculty services and effective use of Faculty technology resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience with server and network device administration in a Microsoft Windows Active Directory and Ubuntu Linux mixed environment and its successors.
  • Microsoft Server Certification, VMWare Certification, CISSP/CISM/GSEC or similar and Unix/Apple and Mobile Computer Platform Certification are assets, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Relevant industry certifications are assets, including (as applicable): Microsoft (Azure/Windows Server/M365), VMware or equivalent virtualization platforms, cloud certifications (AWS/Azure/GCP), security certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM, GIAC), and certifications or demonstrated expertise in Apple/macOS, mobile platforms (iOS/Android), and endpoint management (e.g., Intune/Jamf), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience working in a complex, heterogeneous enterprise IT environment, supporting on-premises, cloud, and hybrid infrastructure and services.
  • Three years of demonstrated, hands-on experience with Linux/UNIX and Windows Server administration, including identity and access services (e.g., Active Directory/AzureAD/Entra ID), remote/virtual desktop services as applicable, and systems hardening and patch management.
  • two years of demonstrated, hands-on experience with Cloud platforms and services (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP), including management of IaaS/PaaS workloads and integration with vendor-managed SaaS services.
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience with core enterprise services and protocols such as DNS/DHCP, directory and file services (e.g., SMB/Samba), email/collaboration platforms, and web/application hosting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of networking and security fundamentals, including routing/switching concepts, VLANs, VPNs, firewalls, and VoIP/unified communications as applicable, with experience configuring, maintaining, and monitoring network and security services.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships and deliver high-quality client service in a collaborative, team-based environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, including leading project workstreams and coordinating contributors to deliver outcomes on time.
  • Demonstrated judgment, tact, and professionalism when working with diverse stakeholders, including managing competing priorities and supporting demanding clients with clarity and accountability.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to diagnose and resolve routine and complex infrastructure and network issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement preventative improvements.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, analyze, and improve systems and services using current operational best practices (e.g., change management, documentation/SOPs, security-by-design, patch and vulnerability management, monitoring and alerting, and service continuity).
  • Ability to explain technical concepts and recommendations to non-technical audiences clearly, both verbally and in writing, including preparing documentation, summaries, and status updates.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment, adapt to change, learn new technologies quickly, and maintain current knowledge through continuous learning.
  • High degree of initiative and a demonstrated commitment to improving the reliability, security, and overall quality of IT services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice to the Director on long-term infrastructure planning, including lifecycle, capacity, and service delivery options (local, University-provided, and vendor-managed).
  • Plan, implement, administer, and continuously improve the Faculty’s network, server, storage, virtualization, and cloud/hybrid infrastructure, including appliances and externally contracted SaaS/PaaS/IaaS services.
  • Administer and support core operating systems, platforms, and services, including; Windows Server and Linux/UNIX, databases, enterprise utilities, and containerized and cloud services as applicable, identity and access (e.g., AD and successor services), file services, monitoring/logging, web and related infrastructure services
  • Maintain security and service integrity including operational security monitoring (alerts/reports), implementation of technical controls, coordination of remediation with central stakeholders, and contribution to risk documentation (e.g., IRRMs).
  • Ensure reliable operation and availability of networks and attached systems/devices through proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance tuning
  • Develop, maintain, and improve SOPs/runbooks and technical documentation (architecture, configurations, procedures), ensuring documentation is current, accessible, and supports operational continuity.
  • Act as a resource to IT staff when dealing with problems related to network or server infrastructure.
  • Respond to user problems and requests for advice and assistance, and troubleshooting and problem solving issues as required.
