About The Position

The Enterprise NERC Reliability Assurance (ENRA) team at AEP provides coordination and decision-making authority for NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) compliance obligations. The team leads cross business unit teams, executes process improvements, performs root cause and incident analysis, provides independent oversight and technical support, project and risk management, metrics development, and engagement and outreach. Within ENRA, the NERC Policy & Engagement team supports regulatory analysis, policy development, and stakeholder coordination related to the development of NERC reliability standards; monitors emerging issues; prepares summaries; coordinates stakeholder recommendations on corporate positions; and helps represent AEP in regulatory and industry forums, strengthening the organization’s ability to anticipate changes, influence policy outcomes, and maintain strong relationships across the reliability ecosystem.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, communications, computer science, business, or related field of study; or Associate's degree in one of the aforementioned fields of study and two (2) years of relevant work experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience in electric utility or similarly regulated industry.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in public policy, engineering, law, business, or a related field.
  • Experience in energy systems, regulatory affairs, or public policy.
  • NERC-focused compliance or reliability certifications or PMP or CAPM certifications.
  • Experience with utilities, Regional Entities, NERC, and familiarity with ballots, drafting teams, or comment cycles.
  • Demonstrated skill in resolving complex technical or policy issues.
  • Proven ability to build relationships, manage cross‑functional work, and produce clear policy materials.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast‑moving standards environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the internal standards‑development workflow, coordinating reviews, aligning stakeholders, and ensuring timely submission of comments and ballot participation.
  • Facilitate collaboration across business units to gather insights, resolve differences, and present unified organizational positions.
  • Lead the development of AEP’s policy positions by synthesizing SME input, drafting recommendations, and shaping clear, defensible corporate perspectives.
  • Review emerging NERC standards, regulatory filings, and policy proposals to assess potential impacts on AEP operations and strategy.
  • Track and interpret emerging regulatory, industry, and standards‑development trends to inform leadership and internal partners.
  • Prepare summaries, talking points, and briefing materials to support leadership and SMEs in policy and standards‑related discussions.
  • Represent AEP in NERC, Regional Entity, and industry forums to advance AEP’s policy perspectives and influence standards outcomes.
  • Coordinate solicitation, evaluation, and submission of AEP nominations for NERC and industry committees, working groups, and drafting teams.
  • Develop and track metrics that measure Policy & Engagement team performance, including ballot effectiveness, participation quality, and engagement outcomes.
  • Support policy‑focused interactions with federal and regional regulators by preparing materials and coordinating discussions that inform AEP’s regulatory engagement strategy.
  • Contribute to ENRA initiatives that enhance policy coordination, documentation, and organizational readiness across the standards and regulatory engagement lifecycle.
