About The Position

Performs a wide variety of police-related duties such as parking enforcement, and handling abandoned vehicles reports in instances where a Police Officer is not required. Enforces city code and ordinances relative to dogs, trash, weeds, abandoned vehicles, and debris. Answers citizen complaints, and may input and retrieve information from computer terminals; performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Drivers License.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic pertinent Federal, State and Local laws and Ordinances, codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the general principles, practices, methods and techniques of inspection and investigation.
  • Ability to read maps.
  • Ability to effectively operate and communicate via two way radio and/or other communication equipment.
  • Ability to operate vehicles safely.
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Ability to effectively comply with oral and written directions and orders issued within a paramilitary command structure.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, employees and the general public.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety to one’s self, equipment and others.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces City Codes and Ordinances related to Municipal parking codes, impounding of abandoned or junk vehicles, dogs, trash, weeds, debris and may verify business and rental licenses.
  • Prepares necessary reports if inspections; may attend and testify in court and at administrative proceedings concerning Ordinance violations.
  • Posts ten (10) day trash removal procedure notices and contacts appropriate parties for disposition with regard to the property in violation.
  • Prepares reports regarding violations relative to vacant and open residential, commercial or industrial structures.
  • May observe and report incidents or suspicious activity to Supervisor or appropriate agency.
  • May notify Supervisor of incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, elevator emergency, hazardous materials, inclement weather, and other incidents or conditions following established procedures.
  • Communicates in a manner that is responsive and respectful in all situations.
  • Provides information, to the extent authorized, regarding the facility and surrounding area as requested by visitors.
  • May patrol assigned site on foot or in vehicle.
  • May check for unsafe conditions, hazards, unlocked doors, blocked ingress and egress, and unauthorized persons.
  • Records information in the event of accidents and emergencies.
  • Prepares logs or reports as required for post, writes or types reports or enters information in a computer using standard grammar.
  • May answer telephone, gives out routine information and takes messages in person or by telephone.
  • May assist the public in the preparation of forms and statements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
