About The Position

This role is responsible for ensuring safety, health, and fire code compliance within the institution. This includes researching and implementing regulations from various agencies, developing and delivering safety training to staff and offenders, maintaining documentation, and staying updated on standards. The position also involves managing claims and investigations related to injuries, accidents, and complaints, conducting regular inspections, coordinating with external agencies, and ensuring the proper functioning and testing of safety equipment.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in occupational and environmental health, engineering, or human resources management.
  • OR four years of full-time professional work experience in human resources/safety administration (i.e., development and implementation of a safety program, accident prevention, loss control, facility inspection, employee training).
  • OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience totaling four years.

Responsibilities

  • Research and review current regulations, interpretations, and requirements from OSHA, NFPA, EPA, DNR, and other relevant organizations.
  • Develop, implement, and document training for staff and offenders on safety issues, including Bloodborne Pathogens, fire extinguisher use, and chain saw safety.
  • Attend training and seminars to stay updated on standards and regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and other state and federal policies and standards.
  • Fill out permits and make determinations for areas such as confined space to identify necessary protection levels.
  • File first reports of injuries for offender Workman's Compensation claims.
  • Respond to inquiries from claim administrators regarding claims.
  • Schedule depositions between offender lawyers and claim administrators.
  • Retrieve medical records and applicable paperwork for Workman's Compensation litigation.
  • Record and summarize OSHA 300 logs annually and post them.
  • Act as a liaison to agencies like the State Building codes and Fire Marshal's office, communicating proposed work and submitting plans as necessary.
  • Investigate offender and staff injuries, arson, and complaints within the institution.
  • Respond to requests for information related to workplace safety.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all areas and departments to ensure compliance with safety and health laws and regulations.
  • Provide monthly reports detailing inspection findings, noting deficiencies, problems, or concerns for supervisors to address.
  • Track the abatement of items cited on monthly inspections.
  • Coordinate annual inspections with contractors and the State Fire Marshal.
  • Provide a Plan of Correction to the Fire Marshal annually.
  • Coordinate proactive measure tours, such as OSHA consultations.
  • Conduct and document fire drills on a quarterly basis.
  • Determine the appropriateness of safety and emergency equipment.
  • Order, inspect, replace, and remove equipment from service based on regulatory requirements.
  • Operate and calibrate testing equipment, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation.
  • Train offenders/staff on safety-related issues and institutional requirements.
