About The Position

Under general direction, this position conducts and coordinates a variety of leadership, public safety, health, and social services outreach or community development activities; engages residents in activities and efforts that will improve quality of life, safety, and neighborhood appearance. This position reports to the Office of Community Liaison (OCL) manager and works as a Neighborhood Liaison team member. The position will work closely with other OCL Liaisons and collaborate with APD Police Officers, in various community engagement programs and events that encompass crime prevention, community resources, community education, law enforcement accessibility. They will assist with implementing, coordinating and participating in all other OCL programs/ events such as National Night Out, Pride Parade, Faith & Blue weekend, Seniors & Law Enforcement Together, Operation Blue Santa and Coffee with a Cop. The position will partner with people from different segments of the community to include African American, Asian, Hispanic, Immigrant, and LGBTQIA+. This position will work with community centers, stakeholders and places of worship. The position works in an office/warehouse space. The OCL is responsible for programs that require warehouse operations including inventory, packaging, possible use of warehouse equipment. Teamwork is essential in this position.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of local City, State, Federal, and private service providers and funding sources.
  • Knowledge of community organizing and neighborhood development techniques.
  • Skill in planning, coordinating and implementing community programs and activities.
  • Skill in developing new initiatives and working with service providers to plan and coordinate services.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with the public and making effective use of community resources.
  • Skill in working with community representatives to identify and address local needs.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in interpreting, organizing, coordinating and executing assignments, projects and programs.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in conflict resolution and negotiation.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to work well with individuals from a variety of different backgrounds and experience, including community leaders, residents, service providers, local officials and elected representatives.
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Social Work, Public Policy, Public Health, or in a field related to the job.
  • Three (3) years experience in community outreach or neighborhood wide community programs.
  • Must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
  • Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions will result in disqualification.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluent (read, write, & speak) in Spanish or other language and English.

  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.

Responsibilities

  • Meets with neighborhood residents, leaders, and community groups to identify needs and available resources.
  • Coordinates, plans, and develops programs and activities to address resident's economic, social service, and community improvement needs and/or improves coordination of existing services.
  • Develops and implements a variety of health and/or safety promotions, outreach, and education efforts.
  • Coordinates volunteer programs and trains residents in neighborhood support activities, including grant writing.
  • Supports Self-Reliant Neighborhood activities for neighborhood improvement.
  • Assists in the establishment or revitalization of neighborhood associations and neighborhood watch blocks.
  • Represents the City of Austin before community groups.
  • Writes, drafts, and completes reports and/or documents.
  • May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others.
