About The Position

This position requires a person with extensive practical and technical knowledge and experience with various NDT Test Methods and the associated specification requirements. This individual will be the technical lead for their respective NDT discipline. They will be expected to work with minimal supervision and interface with all levels of management within the company and suppliers. Additionally, this individual would work extensively with Navy customers, particularly SOS and the NAVSEA Tech Warrant Holder. Trains, examines and certifies nondestructive test (NDT) personnel, ensuring that NDT personnel are competent and qualified to perform the applicable tests in conformance with Company and contractual requirements. Provides technical support to resolve technical issues, as well as the development, interpretation, adaptation, qualification and implementation of specifications, procedures, processes, etc. Approves NDT procedures and workmanship standards, and ensures the adequacy of the program. Develops and administers NDT personnel training and certification programs. Provides counseling/corrective guidance regarding examination performance, and decertifies or retrains/tests personnel as appropriate. Conducts site monitoring/surveillance of NDT personnel and operations; evaluation of program elements; and product re-inspection activities. Interprets applicable specifications, procedures, and other technical requirements. Compiles and prepares technical and interpretive reports relating to NDT detected workmanship trends; analysis of reject rates; the resolution of problems; and the impact of methodology changes on manufacturing and inspection operations. NNS NDT Engineering is standing up a team that will provide increased oversight of NDT Inspectors, along with deckplate mentoring and coaching. Expectations for this position will be to act as the team lead to oversee daily strategy and activities of NDT Examiners and Engineering Technicians operating on the deckplate. This is considered a field position, requiring daily presence on the deckplate and interaction directly with inspectors and inspection management. The selected candidate will be expected to guide the team through inspector oversight, identification of gaps / weaknesses, and development of correctives to upskill the inspection workforce (i.e. - impromptu training, formal training, job aids, highlights, quality stand downs, etc...). Strong communication skills are a must, with the ability to effectively interact with varying audiences including trades, inspectors, and management up through senior leadership.

Requirements

  • Certified Nondestructive Test Examiner certification (ASNT Level III or NAVSEA 250-1500-1 Test Examiner)
  • 6 years of relevant experience in inspection, test or quality role

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable NDT techniques and methods, as well as their physical, chemical and mathematical fundamentals.
  • Proficiency in analytical processes and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong communication skills, with ability to effectively communicate with trades, inspectors, and varying levels of management
  • Experience and qualifications held in multiple NDT methods, to include MT, PT, and VT. Additional experience is a plus.
  • Ability to assess competencies, identify gaps, and develop training plans
  • Familiarity with NNS NDT Written Practice, NDT method procedures, and NAVSEA specifications
  • Understanding of welding processes and associated considerations for inspection
