About The Position

General Dynamics NASSCO is seeking an NDT Inspector J1-J4 to join their Quality Assurance department in Norfolk, Virginia. This role involves performing predetermined methods, operations, setups, and specifications for QA inspections and tests to ensure conformance to drawings, specifications, and contract requirements. The inspector will also conduct surveillance audits throughout all phases of ship repair. The position requires a Technical/Associate Degree or 4-6 years of Quality Assurance inspection experience. Certification as a Non-Destructive Test Inspector Level II (VT, PT, MT, UT) is required, or the ability to obtain it. Knowledge of ship construction and repair procedures, including welding, structural, machinery, electrical, and piping, along with familiarity with various inspection measuring instruments, is essential. The role also demands the ability to work at heights, enter confined spaces, climb ladders, work around moving machinery, and operate equipment like sky climbers, scissor lifts, and condors. Proficiency in reading blueprints, military standards/specifications, regulatory body requirements, and shipbuilding specifications is necessary. The inspector must be computer literate, possess good communication skills, and demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and good judgment. Specific requirements vary by Journeyperson level (J1-J4), with higher levels requiring advanced NDT qualifications, proficiency in reporting, conducting audits, training junior inspectors, and advanced computer skills.

Requirements

Technical/Associate Degree, preferably Q.A./Marine-related or equivalent, or 4 to 6 years of Quality Assurance inspection experience or equivalent trade related.
Certified as a Non-Destructive Test Inspector Level II (includes VT, PT, MT, and UT) to NAVSEA TECHPUB requirements. If not certified, must be able to be certified if assigned these duties.
Knowledge of ship construction and repair procedures including welding, structural, machinery, electrical piping, ventilation and familiarity with various measuring instruments related to inspections.
Must be able to perform the essentials of the position including the ability to work at heights, enter tanks, voids and cofferdams to perform competent person duties.
Must be able to climb vertical ladders, work around moving machinery and perform tasks while using a sky climber, scissor lift and/or condor.
Ability to read and understand blueprints, military standard/specifications, Regulatory Body Requirements, and Shipbuilding Specifications.
Possess a good general knowledge of ship repair procedures and test requirements.
Skilled in blueprint reading, precision instrument utilization, and technical manual interpretation.
Able to set, self-calibrate and use assigned testing, inspection and QA instruments.
Fundamental problem-solving skills.
Able to use basic Lean and Six Sigma principles to provide recommended solutions to identified or perceived problems.
Computer literate with knowledge of NASSCO and mainframe computer.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, decisiveness, resourcefulness, and good judgment in dealing with others.
Must meet all Journeyperson QA NDT Inspector 3 requirements.
Must be able to qualify as a Level II Non-Destructive Testing Inspector in the UT shear wave within 6 months of assignment NDT process and must be qualified in all Other NDT areas: VT, LPT, MT, and UT- thickness readings).
Must be proficient in reviewing and following NDT procedures, work specifications, drawings, technical manuals and regulatory body requirements.
Must be able to generate NDT reports documenting the results of inspections.
Must be able to draft and submit required reports and condition found reports (CFR) as required.
Must be able to identify Departures from Specification (DFS) and provide all Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) required to draft and submit a DFS for acceptance.
Must be able to conduct Correction Action Request (CAR) surveillance for close out.

Must have advanced computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and must have basic skills with Access Data Base and Project.

Responsibilities

Performs predetermined methods, operations, setups and prescribed specifications for QA inspections and tests required to substantiate conformance to drawings, specifications, and contract requirements.
Conducts surveillance audits in all phases and stages during ship repair.
Witnesses or performs and documents (I) (V) and (G) point inspections and other test at key points in the work process.
Creates written records to document the inspection results and provide supporting documentation to the Test and Inspection plan.
Ensures all QA inspection equipment being utilized is calibrated and is certified under the company’s calibration process/programs.
Evaluates results from tests and inspections to determine acceptability.
Has the authority to accept, reject or rework defective or malfunctioning units as per procedures.
Responsible for managing OQE documentation for work assigned to them.
Responsible for receipt inspections.
Applies testing criteria in accordance with applicable specifications or standards and evaluates results.
Conducts in-process inspections to ensure correct materials, proper fabrication and installation procedures are utilized during production process.
Performs monitoring and surveillance of shipboard production processes for compliance to standards requirements.
Researches standards and specification requirements to develop monitoring/surveillance plans.
Organizes and reports test results.
Performs specialized inspections.
Performs and reports work in process observations/surveillances/audits to provide an overview of adherence to work specifications and the effectiveness of the Quality Management System.
Performs non-destructive testing and critical coating inspections as required by specifications, NAVSEA Standard Items, process control procedures or other technical documentation (when assigned these duties).
Reviews all Work Specification items, drawings, technical manuals, NAVSEA Standard Items or other contract documentation to ensure all Testing and Inspection requirements are identified or captured in the TIP.
