About The Position

This is a Non-Exempt position that falls within the Natural Resources Technician series. The Wildlife Health Technician works within the Wildlife Division in Nespelem, Washington and supports critical efforts in monitoring and managing wildlife disease for the lands under Tribal authority including the South Half, North Half, and Aboriginal Territories. This position assists in the detection, prevention, and mitigation of diseases affecting wildlife populations. This is a term-position and currently funded until September 30, 2027. Unless additional funding is received, this position will not continue after the original funding depletes.

Requirements

  • Wildlife Health Technician I: High School Diploma or GED and a satisfactory work history.
  • Wildlife Health Technician II: High School Diploma or GED and 36 months progressively responsible experience equivalent to the Technician I or equivalent level, related to wildlife, agriculture, natural resource management or other closely related field.
  • An Associate’s degree in Natural Resources Management, Wildlife Management, Agriculture, or other closely related field will substitute for related work experience.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ vehicle insurance and maintain throughout employment.
  • Driving record must qualify for a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operators Identification card.
  • Requires background clearance (Tribal, State) and maintain clearance throughout employment.
  • Knowledge of general principles and procedures of biological data collection, wildlife management, food and habits of wildlife species, wildlife and habitat ecology, and livestock husbandry.
  • Attention to detail and experience using hand and power tools, and proper care and maintenance of tools.
  • Sufficient knowledge of proper English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Sufficient human relations skill to work productively and cooperatively with diverse teams, exercise patience when dealing with internal and external customers, and convey technical concepts.
  • Ability to understand complicated directions and be able to find locations in the field based on those directions.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to use near vision to read printed materials.
  • Auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone.
  • Manual and finger dexterity to write, use a pointing device and keyboard at an acceptable rate that meets department deadlines and accuracy standards, operate microcomputer, and use other standardized office equipment, almost constantly requiring repetitive motions.
  • Ability to sit or stand for considerable periods of time (hours).
  • Ability to work a variable schedule, including: long days, evenings, early mornings, holidays, and weekends as the work dictates.
  • Ability to travel for meetings, training and conference participation as necessary.
  • Ability and willingness to accommodate a flexible schedule with changes on short-notice.
  • Ability to repetitively lift up to 50 lbs. and carry up to 45 lbs. while hiking in steep terrain.
  • Ability to travel away from duty station to conduct field work.
  • Ability to work and drive in adverse weather conditions and rough terrain, sometimes in remote locations in all kinds of weather.
  • Excellent physical condition and will be expected to pull, push, or lift heavy objects performing tasks on variable and slippery terrain in all weather conditions.
  • This may require working alone in these situations.
  • Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the detection, prevention, and mitigation of diseases affecting wildlife populations.
  • Supports critical efforts in monitoring and managing wildlife disease for the lands under Tribal authority.
  • Maintains and cleaning vehicles and trailers.
  • Cleans the lab and related workspaces.
  • Prepares diagnostic specimens and sampling supplies for packaging and shipping.
  • Effectively read a map and use GPS tools in the field.
  • Works with sickly or dead animals that may be in differing levels of cleanliness and/or decay and successfully collect biological samples suitable to be sent in for disease (or other) testing.
  • Works with multiple types of wildlife including: big game species, bats, rodents, carnivores, birds/waterfowl, etc.
  • Operates equipment, including hand and power tools and sampling gear, safely and effectively.
  • Safely operate trucks and trailers; backing up, loading, and unloading equipment off the trailers.
  • Reminds others of safety practices to minimize the likelihood of accidents.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work to achieve results, goals and objectives on time.
  • Handles adverse situations, making appropriate decisions, working calmly, and accurately.
  • Works effectively in a multi-cultural environment as a team member in a pleasant and efficient manner.
