About The Position

Responsibilities include locating underground utility lines, confirm condition of located lines, and installation and maintenance of natural gas distribution lines. This role ensures the correct and safe location of gas and water lines, reviews and interprets architectural drawings, blueprints, and maps to identify utility services, and maintains records of work activities. The apprentice will install natural gas utility lines, meters, and boxes, conduct leak surveys and repairs, maintain meter and rectifier stations, fuse pipes, connect services for customers, inspect piping, and install appliances. They will also conduct testing and inspections, take readings, perform pressure tests, and transport materials. General maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and tools is required, along with adherence to safety procedures and inventory management. The role involves preparing various forms and reports, and regular attendance is mandatory. Some nights and weekends may be required.

Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Operator Qualification Certifications applicable to the position as set forth in the Natural Gas Operations and Maintenance Manual within the first 6 months of hire.
Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and be insurable.
Must pass a DOT Drug Screen and criminal background check.
High school diploma or GED.
Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
Must be able to operate a variety of equipment, machinery and tools as necessary to complete essential functions, which may include a motor vehicle, utility locator, ground penetrating radar, trencher, backhoe, tapping machine, electric fusion machine, combustible gas indicator, flame ionization unit, gas detection tools, leak detector, metal detector, manhole hook, probe, air compressor, meters, gauges, mechanic tools, hand tools, digging tools, measuring devices, or radio communications equipment.
Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively, work under pressure and to prioritize.
Must be able to proficiently read, write and communicate clearly in English.
Must be able to maintain a positive and professional attitude and an effective working relationship with, and among coworkers.
Must be able to travel throughout the Baldwin County area regularly and out of town occasionally.
Must be able to stand and walk around regularly, both inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather and on uneven terrain.
Must be able to bend, stoop, twist, reach overhead and lift, carry, push and/or pull objects and materials up to 50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

Previous experience and/or training involving gas utility installation,/repair, general maintenance work, and/or equipment operation a plus.
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job a plus.

Responsibilities

Ensure the correct and safe location of gas and water lines and reporting any issues to the Natural Gas Manager.
Reviews and interprets architectural drawings, blueprints, and maps to identify location of utility services.
Maintains records of work activities; draws maps of utility line locations.
Installs natural gas utility lines, installs/replaces meters and meter boxes, installs valve rings and valve boxes, pressurizes meters, adjusts and sets regulators, conducts leak surveys to locate/identify leaks, repairs leaks and broken utility lines, maintains meter stations and rectifier stations, fuses pipes together, connects service for customers, inspects piping, installs appliances, or other related tasks.
Conducts testing and inspections, takes readings and records data; performs pressure tests.
Transports, hauls, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects or at work sites.
Performs general/preventative maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Follows established safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.
Assists in ensuring adequate inventory of parts, tools, equipment, and supplies to conduct work activities.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, maps, vehicle maintenance records, or other documents.
Assists to other employees or departments as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
