About The Position

From electricity to power our lives, clean water to be healthy, natural gas to stay warm, internet to keep businesses connected, to transit services to get them where they need to go. This position requires an employee to work between 20-25 hours per week during the school semesters, and 40 hours per week during summer, not to exceed 1,500 hours in a calendar year. Each semester, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and graduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours. INTERN GUIDELINES: Students who have completed at least one year of college and are enrolled as a full-time student may apply. Must be enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program. A student’s intern position will end within three months after graduation.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a school with a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
  • High school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • One year of college course work is preferred with an emphasis in pre-engineering or other related technical field required.
  • No previous engineering experience is required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license (minimum Class F).
  • Working knowledge of engineering functions and problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to Plan, organize and coordinate technical work.
  • Ability to Effectively handle numerous assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to Communicate thoughts and ideas verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to Be dependable due to the needs and duties of the position.
  • Ability to Complete assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to Effectively utilize a range of digital tools and platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, artificial intelligence-enhanced applications, and self-service systems.
  • Must possess a willingness and capacity to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven platforms relevant to utility operations.
  • Maintain adherence to all company policies.
  • Must be able to enter, work in, and exit restricted areas (including, but not limited to, small crawl spaces under homes and attics).
  • Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
  • Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.
  • New hires are informed of the requirements of the Internship Program upon hire, and incumbents must continue to meet the requirements each semester in order to continue employment.
  • Interns who do not meet the requirements may be ineligible for the internship and their employment may be terminated.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or GIS software is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs review of plats and plans from local engineers, architects, developers, and other agencies for availability, adequacy, and locations of gas service and for possible conflicts.
  • Prepares contract specifications and bidding documents. Provides contract administration including preparing payments, contract bid evaluation, change orders, and other administrative work.
  • Performs engineering studies and prepares reports. Performs system modeling for the Natural Gas & Water distribution systems.
  • Designs of relocations and adjustments to CU’s gas and water facilities as required for highway and street widening projects, sewer projects, or any related type of project requiring relocations or adjustments.
  • Designs of gas & water main and service renewal projects.
  • Reviews, updates, and prepares gas and water construction standards as directed. Prepares job sketches, drawings, material take-offs, cost estimates, authorizations, workforce management estimates, as may be required.
  • Prepares design drawings for construction of gas & water facilities with AutoCad and/or ESRI software.
  • Performs field work such as taking elevations at test holes to gain information for design work.
  • Designs of residential, commercial, and industrial gas & water services and metering facilities to provide service to new and existing customers.
  • Performs corrosion related survey work as necessary including the use of locating equipment and voltage meters. May be required to paint meter sets and/or install anodes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
