About The Position

Oregon State Hospital is seeking an experienced Native Service Provider to join our Creative Arts & Therapy Program. This position is within the Vocational, Educational, Spiritual Care, Peer Recovery, and Native Services Department, which offers a comprehensive range of services to the forensic inpatient and residential populations within the hospital. The Native Services Provider will offer spiritual and native services, including special events and cultural practices, for patients.

Requirements

  • Experience providing services in the community specific to the practice of native services.
  • Experience facilitating native services to include, but not limited to; sweat lodge ceremonies, talking circles, smudge ceremonies, and indigenous arts & crafts.
  • Training or education from a native elder focused on ethical practices in providing native services and serving others.
  • Education through an institution focused on ethical practices in providing native services.
  • Experience working with a tribe(s) and tribal leadership.
  • Experience working with individuals experiencing severe or persistent mental illness or individuals who have received services within a secure environment.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field or 3 years of full-time experience as a Spiritual Teacher in a Tribal Community, or Native Indigenous environment.
  • Must have a criminal records check and drug screen that meets OHA/OSH criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
  • Must complete I-9 documentation and confirm authorization to work in the United States within three days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provide spiritual and native services with special events and cultural practices for patients.
  • Meet with patients to identify spiritual and cultural needs and determine the appropriate path of intervention in consultation with the patient’s treatment team.
  • Work with patients to grow spiritually in their cultural and spiritual practice through Indigenous arts and crafts, smudge ceremonies, sweat lodge sessions, individual and group counseling (including "Talking Circles"), and accompany patients on outings with OSH staff.
  • Gain and apply knowledge of institutional, spiritual, cultural, and native practices, focusing on how these practices help people develop spiritually and foster healthy attitudes, values, beliefs, cognitions, associates, and family/community relationships.
  • Help patients maintain positive contacts and involvement with their families and access family members in a safe, secure, and positive manner.
  • Schedule appointment-based counseling services for referred patients.
  • Consult with treatment teams regarding patient beliefs and customs.
  • Document progress and group notes of all services.
  • Enhance teamwork within native services across OSH and in interdisciplinary endeavors.
  • Use communication and interaction methods with staff that enhance positive relationships and a sense of teamwork/community.
  • Develop and implement an effective program of spiritual services, music, educational material, equipment, and sacred spaces for all native services groups and practices.
  • Create, maintain, and improve a management information system of records, scheduling, and services.
  • Continually work to improve the efficiency and quality of systems for working with colleagues and delivering the native spiritual program.
  • Assist with review and provide input for local, state, and federal rules affecting the policies and procedures of the native spiritual program.
  • Engage and assist volunteers through mentoring, training, support, counseling, and supervision.
  • Treat consumers and co-workers with dignity and respect.
  • Demonstrate recognition and appreciation of the value of individual and cultural differences.
  • Ensure service delivery is provided in a culturally competent way, with printed materials available in different languages or alternate formats, bilingual services available, and accessible facilities.
  • Understand how to access OSH Cultural Diversity Manager with questions or practical assistance with service delivery.
