Under the direction of the site Principal and in collaboration with RCSD District Staff, music teachers will provide music instruction and music instruction programs for students in grades TK-8 and support each school site in the development and implementation of District Music initiatives and curriculum. Purpose: To expand access and provide equity of opportunity for all RCSD students to have music as well as electives and integrated opportunities that enhance college and career readiness through hands-on musical experiences and education. Job Description: TK-2 Elementary Music Teacher: To provide music instruction (at two schools) to all TK-2 grade students focused on dynamics, form, harmony, melody, rhythm, texture, timbre, and tonality through imitation, exploration, improvisation and composition by using Orff, Kodaly, Suzuki or Dalcroze methodologies. TK-5 Elementary Music Teacher: To provide music instruction to all TK-5 grade students focused on dynamics, form, harmony, melody, rhythm, texture, note reading, timbre, and tonality through imitation, exploration, improvisation and composition by using Orff, Kodaly, Suzuki and Dalcroze methodologies. And to provide instrumental music instruction to all 3-5 grade students through the use of boomwhackers, recorders and ukulele. 3-8 Instrumental Music Teacher: To provide instrumental music instruction to all 3-8 grade students focused on dynamics, form, harmony, melody, rhythm, texture, note reading, timbre, and tonality through imitation, exploration, improvisation and composition through instrumental music education starting in the 3rd grade. Must have strong instrumental pedagogy knowledge and experience. 3rd Grade - Boomwhackers 4th Grade - Recorders 5th Grade - Ukulele 6th Grade - Beginning Band/Orchestra 7th-8th Grade - Intermediate Band/Orchestra

Requirements

  • Appropriate California Teaching Credential
  • Diverse interest, abilities and experiences in a variety of musical genres.
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work with and adapt to a variety of teaching styles.
  • A strong instrumental pedagogy on all band and orchestra instruments. (3-8 Instrumental Teachers)
  • Sufficient vision to read material with or without vision aides
  • Sufficient hearing to conduct in-person conversations with students, teachers and parents
  • Sufficient voice volume to be heard at normal conversational distances
  • Ability to stand, sit or walk for extended periods of time
  • Physical, mental and emotional stamina to endure stressful conditions
  • Use hands to touch, handle, reach, feel objects, controls, or tools
  • Ability to demonstrate gross and fine motor skills and movements to students
  • Occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Works with the principal and music supervisor to schedule instructional activities for all grade levels assigned.
  • Gives weekly class instruction to assigned grade levels/subjects.
  • Follows curriculum set by district while adding their personal touch to it.
  • Selects, edits and rearranges orchestrations as needed to conform to the musical ability of all pupils.
  • Organizes and presents music programs for assemblies, classroom demonstrations, PTA programs, community events, and other concerts. (Minimum - 1 school concert and 1 district combined concert/event)
  • Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Recruits elementary and middle school students to receive beginning band or orchestra instrument classes. (3-8 Instrumental Teacher ONLY)
  • Maintains and makes minor adjustments and repairs to musical instruments, including tuning, string replacement, trimming and adjusting reeds, oiling valves and slides, and general upkeep of all RCSD instruments. (3-8 Instrumental Music Teachers ONLY)
  • Prepares semi-annual progress reports for each pupil instructed.
  • Arranges the physical environment in which lessons and rehearsals are to be conducted.
  • Confers with parents and professional staff members on the music program and individual pupil progress in the program.
  • Maintains inventory of, and is responsible for, district musical instruments, equipment and repertoire assigned to their custody.
  • Provides student demonstrations of musical growth and other related activities to classes upon request.
  • Provides professional assistance to other music teachers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
