About The Position

This permanent, part-time vacancy is a 0.5 FTE position with a pro-rated monthly salary of $2,967.95 - $3,607.55 plus benefits. The full-time equivalent salary range for this position is $5,935.91 to $7,215.11 monthly. The role involves performing routine manual and computerized geographic information processing tasks, utilizing GIS technology for various office and field functions. This includes operating and maintaining the GIS system, developing and maintaining digital base maps, data modification and analysis, map creation, and providing GIS services to staff and supporting system users.

Requirements

  • Two years of responsible GIS experience including editing, cartographic or project-based GIS work.
  • Training equivalent to an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in geography, urban planning, computer science or closely related field with emphasis in geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of GIS systems, uses and applications, including hardware and software applications.
  • Knowledge of research methods and techniques related to collecting, analyzing, and evaluating geographic related data.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in recording and conducting analyses of land use, planning and engineering as relates to geographic information, including cartography and the basic symbols and terminology used in mapping.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used for interpreting maps of various media and digitizing data for conversion to GIS usable formats.
  • Knowledge of fundamental computer programming concepts and methods.
  • Knowledge of mathematics.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Ability to use and understand GIS tools (specifically ESRI products such as ArcPro, AGOL, and ArcGIS Enterprise) and methodologies to operate a variety of geographic information system input and output devices, including printers, plotters and other GIS related peripheral equipment/devices in a Windows environment.
  • Ability to create maps and charts from multiple layers of data.
  • Ability to create and maintain geographic databases in an enterprise database environment.
  • Ability to prepare analyses using various related geographic information system software.
  • Ability to review a variety of geographic and mapping data and develop logical conclusions and solutions.
  • Ability to define user needs and make recommendations.
  • Ability to adapt to ongoing technological developments and advancements.
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate several work activities.
  • Ability to research, organize, and maintain accurate office files.
  • Ability to use initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Ability to make mathematical computations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform simple geographic analysis as needed using a variety of modules and GIS software to provide maps and information needed for decision making.
  • Research, create, quality check, maintain and disseminate GIS data layers and the City’s asset inventory.
  • Use data sources such as digital CAD files, scanned maps and orthophotos to create and maintain layers.
  • Create and maintain metadata.
  • Work through projects to solve GIS related problems and present data in a user-friendly format using ArcPro, Arcade, and cartographic methodologies.
  • Create hard copy and digital maps using GIS methods, cartographic skills, basemaps and other data including reports, charts and tables.
  • Train and provide technical direction to users and operators on GIS software and/or custom applications.
  • Sync asset information with the City’s asset management system and resolve any data discrepancies.
  • Resolve user problems.
  • Write documentation for utilizing GIS software and applications.
  • Develop system documentation and user guides.
  • Provide GIS maps, data, simple analysis and services to City staff, other agencies, consultants, and the public.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings.
  • Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of geographic information systems and computing.
  • Organize work, set priorities and follow up to ensure coordination and completion of assigned work.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
