About The Position

Our Lady of Peace Parish is a 925-household Catholic parish and school of the Diocese of Columbus, serving the community for over 80 years. The Music and Liturgy Director, serving under the pastor and adhering to diocesan and parish guidelines, is responsible for guiding and providing musical accompaniments for all liturgical and para-liturgical ceremonies. This includes parish weekend liturgies, weddings, funerals, Holy Days, school Masses, and other special services. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position, primarily based in the parish office and church, with flextime allowed to offset weekend hours and a regularly scheduled weekday day-off. This role requires adherence to established policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Deep desire to grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ in fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Knowledge of all Catholic liturgical music documents and Catholic liturgy.
  • Familiarity with the Liturgical Guidelines of the Diocese of Columbus with principles and dimensions of Catholic faith formation.
  • Strong background in sacred music, with a good working knowledge of Gregorian chant, and liturgy with piano proficiency and organ mastery.
  • Extensive experience with forming and directing cantors, choirs, scholas, and other musicians.
  • Solid attention to detail and well-organized.
  • Deep knowledge of and respect for Catholic liturgical norms and principles.
  • Compliance with BCI&I background checks and completion of Protecting God's Children program.
  • Minimum 3 years parish music experience or similar experience.
  • Proficiency in organ, piano, and keyboard skills.
  • Proven administrative skills including interpersonal relations, conflict resolution, management and supervision, visioning and planning, budget preparation and collaborative minister.
  • Ability to work with others in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, write correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform mathematical operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and direct all liturgical music needs of the parish.
  • Ensure music is provided for every weekend, Holy Day, All School Mass, and special parish Mass, including piano or organ accompaniment with vocals, by collaborating with volunteers and paid musicians.
  • Direct and rehearse an adult choir, research and select suitable music, and recruit and develop the choir on a continuing basis.
  • Support the parish school's music teacher with the rehearsal of a children's choir and the selection of suitable music for school Masses and other liturgical celebrations.
  • Research, review, and order new music for choirs and maintain accompaniment folders.
  • Maintain the Cantor Program and train and rehearse new cantors.
  • Provide music for instrumentalists and rehearse as needed.
  • Arrange for the maintenance and preventative care of the organ and piano.
  • Prepare the annual budget for parish music, monitor spending, communicate budget concerns, and report on budget performance.
  • Participate in the parish liturgy committee and assist in preparing a liturgical master calendar for parish liturgies.
  • Prepare worship aids, individually or with other staff, for events such as funerals, weddings, First Communion, Confirmation, and Holy Week.
  • Coordinate music for weddings, including scheduling meetings with couples, selecting music, cantors, and instrumentalists, compiling music, scheduling rehearsals, approving outside music, completing planning forms, and maintaining a wedding music file.
  • Coordinate music for funerals, including providing accompaniment, contacting cantors, providing music, scheduling rehearsals, and providing liturgy planning.
  • Maintain copyright compliance through One License and the Source & Summit digital platform.
  • Review new music, liturgical journals, and attend workshops to stay updated on liturgical changes.
  • Attend staff meetings and retreats.
  • Change and maintain hymn number boards, and order annual missalettes and other publications.
  • Maintain the music ministry budget.
  • Ensure regular attendance and punctuality.
