About The Position

This position is responsible for conducting daily shop sales with excellent customer service, meeting and exceeding monthly sales goals, and assisting customers in making purchases. It also involves handling donations, performing accurate opening and closing procedures for the Museum Shop (including cash counting and deposits), and operating the point of sales system efficiently. The role requires demonstrating product knowledge, assisting with inventory tracking and control, stocking and pricing items, monitoring displays, and ensuring the overall presentation and safety of the Museum Shop. Additionally, the associate will follow shipping procedures, provide information about museum exhibits and programs, maintain a professional public image, help control shrink/theft, answer incoming calls, and assist at the Admissions Desk, including selling memberships. Training in retail sales techniques is expected. The role also involves greeting visitors, informing them of gallery closures or announcements, and operating the Shopify POS system and front desk equipment. Encouraging the use of museum apps and selling memberships are key responsibilities. A commitment to the Mission, Vision, and Values of the National Museum of Wildlife Art (NMWA) is essential.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate computers, Shopify POS, and credit card machines.
  • Must work well with all elements of the visiting public and museum staff.
  • Accurately assess and adjust in a positive fashion to changing situations presented at the museum shop or at admissions.
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to stand, sit, reach, and kneel at various times during the working day.
  • Ability to work on a computer for up to 8 hours a day.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to use the phone for extended periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily shop sales while providing excellent customer service.
  • Meet and exceed monthly sales goals.
  • Assist customers to make the perfect purchase.
  • Include request for donations during sales.
  • Perform efficient and accurate opening and/or closing Museum Shop procedures, including counting cash, nightly deposit, and securing the store.
  • Review drawer count throughout the day.
  • Operate the Museum Shop and Admissions point of sales system efficiently and accurately.
  • Demonstrate product knowledge to encourage more sales.
  • Assist with tracking and appropriate control of shop inventory.
  • Stock shop inventory items and price incoming inventory.
  • Mark low and out of stock items on the board for reordering.
  • Ensure all items are properly priced.
  • Print and apply barcode labels for inventory when necessary.
  • Monitor store displays to ensure best inventory displays.
  • Monitor and regularly inspect the Museum Shop to ensure the best quality presentation, promote the general museum image, and provide a safe, secure environment.
  • Follow shipping procedures for timely shipping of purchases from the Museum Shop and website.
  • Provide a concise, informative, and enthusiastic account of all relevant museum exhibits and program opportunities to the visiting public.
  • Provide an appropriate public image for the museum.
  • Help control shrink/theft of store products.
  • Answer incoming calls to the Museum in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Assist in operating the Admission Desk as scheduling requires, including selling Museum memberships.
  • Assist in receiving inventory and assist the Shop Supervisor as required.
  • Participate in retail training programs to improve selling techniques.
  • Greet all museum visitors.
  • Inform visitors of any possible gallery closures or announcements about the Museum.
  • Operate Shopify POS system and all front desk admissions related equipment.
  • Explain and encourage the use of museum apps to visitors.
  • Encourage/sell new memberships and renewals.
  • Cross-train to assist in operating the Museum shop.
