About The Position

The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Museum is looking to hire a full-time (hourly) Museum Guide to lead tours and Girl Scout programs. By sharing the story of Girl Scouting, the Progressive-Era, and the life of Girl Scouts’ dynamic Founder, Juliette Gordon Low, the dedicated staff of the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Museum educate visitors about this important history, while supporting the GSUSA mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place.

Requirements

  • High School Degree Required
  • Ability to facilitate educational experiences, like guided tours and programs, to those of a variety of ages and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated background or interest in public history, museum education, or informal learning environments.
  • Ability to effectively engage diverse audiences, particularly youth, through interactive and educational experiences.
  • Excellent verbal communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to make historical content accessible, engaging, and engaging.
  • Interpersonal effectiveness and the ability to build positive, professional relationships.
  • Reliability and accountability in supporting team operations and responsibilities.
  • Team orientation and ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues.
  • Strong work ethic and professionalism in a fast-paced, public-facing environment.
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable working with children of all ages.
  • Comfortable presenting to groups and managing group dynamics.
  • Ability to conduct and build on historic information and academic research for tours and activities.
  • Ability to adapt information and activities for various ages and abilities.
  • Proficient math and computer skills, including MS Office.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in museums and/or institutions, with a desire to engage more professionally within the industry.
  • Previous engagement with American History in a higher educational capacity is preferred.
  • Those who have also a background and understanding of the Girl Scouts organizational history and current ethos.
  • Prior experience in an assistant manager capacity.
  • Prior and extensive experience (3+ years) in museum and/or institutions.
  • Background with the GSUSA organization.
  • Prior engagement in detailed academic historical research preferred.
  • Prior experience with reservation platform of FareHarbor preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tours about the history of the Birthplace, the life of Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts, and the Progressive-Era to the public.
  • Speak in front of Girl Scout troops and general visitors of all ages and backgrounds on a regular basis and respond to inquiries from visitors.
  • Serve as a communicative touchpoint between supervisor and the part-time staff of the Birthplace in ensuring all standards and protocols are maintained.
  • Lead Girl Scout and school groups in hands-on activities based on training and materials provided.
  • Continuously improve and maintain knowledge of site history, Girl Scout history, and current Girl Scout program with self-guided research and readings.
  • Participate in peer trainings and present to peers on topics relevant to the site‘s history.
  • Assist with office work, reservations, customer service, maintaining and organizing program supplies and spaces, and other aspects of frontline operations as needed.
