About The Position

The Norman Rockwell Museum (NRM) is seeking articulate and motivated individuals to join their team as Museum Guides. This role involves welcoming and engaging visitors by leading introductory tours of current exhibitions and Norman Rockwell’s Studio, offering interpretive insights and historical context. The position is part-time and suitable for individuals seeking a long-term commitment, with flexible training and tour scheduling available during both days and evenings. While expertise in museum education or art history is a plus, it is not a prerequisite, as guides come from diverse backgrounds including working professionals, retirees, and artists. Museum Guides are expected to commit to one or two daily shifts per week from June to October, and typically one shift per week or every other week for the remainder of the year, with the option to take winters off.

Requirements

  • Computer Literacy and Technology Skills: Comfortable within an information technology environment, with basic use of computer hardware, software, email, calendars, and the Internet.

Responsibilities

  • Lead tours of Norman Rockwell Museum’s collection and special exhibitions for general visitors and tour groups.
  • Develop tours based on training and materials provided by the museum and on further independent research.
  • Provide guided learning experiences for visitors—through a range of formal and informal interactions—to increase awareness and understanding of illustration art, promote visual literacy, and foster connections between our visitors and the art on view.
  • Execute daily logistical operations and follow mandated security procedures.
  • Attend training sessions and curator-led walkthroughs of exhibitions.
  • Build knowledge of illustration art and artists; Norman Rockwell’s life, artistic process, and artwork; and NRM collections and special exhibitions.
  • Incorporate feedback from NRM staff and ongoing tour evaluations to ensure high-quality visitor engagement and accurate and compelling learning experiences.
  • Welcome visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities and create a sense of belonging through consistently gracious and professional interactions.
  • Communicate consistently, reliably, and effectively with NRM staff about scheduling, availability, challenges, and insights.
  • Work effectively with colleagues across all group identities and positions/roles.
