About The Position

The Kentucky Derby Museum is seeking a Museum Education Program Coordinator to work alongside the Education team in the daily management of the Museum’s education initiatives. The primary responsibility for this role is the coordination and facilitation of field trips. This position reports to the Director of Education and has no supervisory responsibilities. The Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization celebrating the tradition, history, hospitality, and pride of the Kentucky Derby, welcoming over 258,000 visitors annually.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in the education field.
  • Two years of relevant experience in an educational or cultural setting.
  • Must possess a valid Kentucky driver’s license.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Sound public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Sound materials management skills.
  • Comfortable with statewide travel in support of educational initiatives.
  • Ability to create and implement innovative education programming and cross-departmental collaborations.
  • Maintains awareness of current educational trends and pedagogical practices.
  • Willingness to study, understands, and learn about the culture and history of the Kentucky Derby and developments in the Thoroughbred Industry.
  • Experience working with the Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as other basic database management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Works with Education team to facilitate in house trips (includes orientations, escorting, teaching interactive programming, etc)
  • Serves as the primary person responsible on the Education team for booking, scheduling, invoicing, and communicating in regards to in-house visits.
  • Collaborates cross-departmentally to provide tours and film viewings. Leads tours of Churchill Downs as needed
  • Work with Education team to facilitate outreach at schools, libraries, retirement centers, and other venues as needed. Some overnights, extended work days, and weekends required.
  • Assists in the management of the annual student art show competition and exhibition.
  • Works with the Education team on the creation, writing and implementation of special projects and programs to widen museum reach.
  • Assists with Education team’s collaboration with other departments, including marketing and communications needs (as they relate to departmental projects)
  • Researches museum education and programming trends, contributes to the department’s tactics for growth.
  • Promotes the Museum’s education programs at community events and professional conferences.
  • Supports Museum wide programming efforts when needed (activations outside of education, FFA week, general admission education etc)
  • Work with Education team to maintain the quality and cleanliness of the Education prop collection and storage
