About The Position

The Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Division of Museums and History, is recruiting for a Museum Director 3. This position is responsible for the overall leadership of the Nevada State Museum Las Vegas, an institution accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The museum is one of seven managed by the Division of Museums and History and is located in central Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Springs Preserve campus. Now approaching its 40th anniversary, the museum requires a director who can oversee all aspects of museum management, including overall leadership; staff and volunteer scheduling; development and work assignments for a team of 20 museum professionals (when fully staffed) and approximately 100 volunteers and docents; daily operations; long term planning; fiscal management; and community relations. The director is expected to set and maintain high standards of professional practice related to ethics and public trust, security and preservation of the museum’s collections and those of its partners, public access to collections, and the development of exhibitions, publications, education, and research initiatives. Additionally, the director actively participates in the development and management of State and Trust Fund budgets, restricted donations and special project accounts, and the pursuit of grants and donor support. Museum Directors are responsible for the overall leadership, operation, planning, and management of a State museum.

Requirements

  • Five or more years of applicable experience as described in the job duties
  • A minimum of three years of supervisory/managerial experience
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the organizational, curatorial, exhibition, and education activities of the museum.
  • Oversee the acquisition, preservation, accession, deaccession, and conservation, use and public access of collections.
  • Ensure the safety, security, and stewardship of collections through facility maintenance and improvements.
  • Conduct outreach, advocacy, visitor surveys, and engaging the public in museum activities.
  • Negotiate and consult with institutions, agencies, individuals, and corporations regarding the exhibition of artifacts and specimens.
  • Ensure that exhibits and programs meet barrier-free and equal access best practices.
  • Develop external fundraising activities and memberships.
  • Manage the budget, ensure compliance with fiscal management requirements, and write grants.
  • Develop long-range and annual plans for the institution.
  • Submit draft changes to the institutional mission statement and policies and procedures.
  • Prepare reports and statistics related to the museum's activities and performance.
  • Responsible for curatorial and restoration activities of the museum’s collection, and the day-to-day operational activities of the museum.
  • Manage a museum with a diverse collection representing multiple subject areas or multiple locations.
  • Perform administrative and managerial duties and oversee research inquiries.
  • Train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate the performance of employees, and other supervisory duties as appropriate for managing people.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
