About The Position

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (ISGM) is seeking flexible, visitor-centered, curious educators to connect visitors to the Museum, its Collection, and its special exhibitions. Museum Teachers encourage inquiry, close looking, slowing down, making personal connections, and bringing multiple perspectives into the interpretation of the Museum and its artworks. This is an onsite, Boston-based, part-time position with a pay rate of $20.00 per hour. Local candidates are strongly preferred.   • Two-year commitment at minimum (actively lead tours through at least August 2028 for those starting training in fall 2026).

Nice To Haves

  • Museum and/or non-profit experience.
  • Fluent in Spanish, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Arabic, and/or ASL.
  • Prior experience in customer service, or other public-facing positions.
  • Some college-level work in education, art education, and/or art history.
  • Familiarity with the Gardner Museum.

Responsibilities

  • Leading interactive tours for all audiences (including adult, university, and K-12).
  • Completing a 10-month training course encompassing teaching practice and Museum content areas (September 2026 - June 2027).
  • Observing tours, co-leading or leading tours, and independently researching the Museum collection during the training period.
  • Completing ongoing training, including monthly meetings, special exhibition training sessions, and occasional HR-required trainings.
  • Leading a minimum of 3 tours per month upon successful completion of the training course.
  • Engaging visitors warmly and asking open-ended questions that prioritize visitors’ perspectives.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor or department head.
