About The Position

The Bilingual Instructional Assistant supports students' English language acquisition from their native language, provides classroom instructional support to the certified teacher, and serves as a resource for bilingual families, teachers, and the community. This role involves assisting with various classroom tasks, translating, monitoring students, and acting as a liaison between the school and families.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one of the following: (a) Received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment; or (b) Hold an associate degree or higher; or (c) Earned seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher; or (d) Completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator.
  • Knowledge of multiple languages.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate activities.
  • Knowledge of concepts of grammar and punctuation.
  • Skills in operating equipment used in a classroom/office setting.
  • Skills in planning and managing projects.
  • Skills in using pertinent software applications.
  • Skills in preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to schedule activities and/or meetings.
  • Ability to gather and/or collate data.
  • Ability to use basic, job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups.
  • Problem solving skills to identify issues and create action plans.
  • Ability to work independently regardless of disability or level.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in administering tests, homework assignments, and make-up work for teachers.
  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments, including translating instructions and materials and adapting lessons for bilingual or cultural understanding.
  • Implements instructional programs and lesson plans under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Assists with maintaining student records, classrooms, and supplies.
  • Assists in mediating problems between school and government persons.
  • Monitors individual students in various settings to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Assists with record keeping and clerical functions.
  • Performs support in all areas of the school and classroom in student activity.
  • Serves as a liaison for families and community in workshops and cultural events.
  • Interprets verbal and written communication to bilingual students and their families, and to other families where parents may not speak or read English.
  • May aid bilingual special needs students.
  • Assists students and families to understand District programs.
