About The Position

This position is responsible for observing all safety rules and regulations, maintaining a clean and orderly work area, and performing various material handling and operational tasks. The role involves operating equipment such as overhead cranes, mobile equipment, and grinders, as well as performing inspections, documentation, and assisting with production processes. The operator is expected to become proficient in all forge crew positions and may be included in on-call weekends once proficient. The role also includes assisting with training, minor maintenance, and other duties as assigned, while adhering to the company's Quality Management System.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Observes all safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintains work area in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Utilizes an overhead crane and various below hook lifting devices.
  • Operates crane and mobile equipment with care.
  • Inspects chains, slings, mobile equipment and cranes daily.
  • Initials and dates bills of lading (BOL)/ dispositions documentation as required.
  • Receives material, equipment and supplies.
  • Performs dimensional inspections on as-forged parts.
  • Separates crop ends by color.
  • Loads crop ends into scrap trucks.
  • Handles, identifies, and transfers raw, work-in-process and finished material.
  • Coats non-ferrous material as required.
  • Assists in conducting physical inventory surveys.
  • Refuels mobile equipment as necessary.
  • Operates grinder to remove defects, cracks, seams, laps, etc. from material.
  • Grinds press dies as necessary.
  • Performs yard duties such as: dumping scale/scrap/trash, arranging press tools, transporting material in/out/ around the shop, and scheduling pick-up for scale/metal recycling/municipal waste.
  • Operated manipulators, forklifts, skid steer, long reach and other mobile equipment as necessary.
  • Expected to become proficient at the skillset of each forge crew position.
  • Receives ingots, cross checking BOLs, various paperwork and inventory tracking system for accuracy, and recording subsequent ingot location and time.
  • Performs post-forge heat treat operations.
  • Assists in the installation or changing of dies or tools.
  • Maintains two-way radio communication with shipping, management, and other press crew members.
  • Reports defective material, tooling and faulty equipment to the Production Manager.
  • Performs work in accordance with NAF’s ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Assists with onboarding and/or training new/existing employees in shipping.
  • Lubricates equipment and performs minor maintenance as necessary.
  • Aids maintenance as needed.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and contributes to an environment of strong teamwork and cooperation.

Responsibilities

  • Receive daily communication from the Blacksmith Production Manager.
  • Utilize overhead crane and various below hook lifting devices to load and unload trucks/railcars and for material movements, operating with care to avoid damage.
  • Inspect chains, slings, mobile equipment, and cranes daily.
  • Initial and date bills of lading (BOL)/dispositions documentation as required.
  • Receive material, equipment, and supplies, initialing and dating packing lists or bills of lading.
  • Order miscellaneous shipping supplies as necessary.
  • Perform dimensional inspections on as-forged parts and record sizes, weights, etc.
  • Separate crop ends by color and load them into scrap trucks.
  • Handle, identify, and transfer raw, work-in-process, and finished material.
  • Coat non-ferrous material as required by conversion customers.
  • Assist in conducting physical inventory surveys.
  • Refuel mobile equipment as necessary.
  • Operate grinder to remove defects from material and grind press dies.
