About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking a Head Football Coach for Sumner Academy for the 26-27 school year. KCKPS is a large, diverse urban school district serving approximately 22,000 students. Sumner Academy is a highly-rated high school. The Head Coach is responsible for all levels and phases of the sport, including the correct and timely completion of assigned duties, potentially delegated to assistants. This role involves enforcing all rules, supervising student athletes, maintaining records, implementing schedules, supervising practices, managing equipment, evaluating student performance, developing training regimes, ensuring facility safety, overseeing coaching personnel, monitoring academic eligibility, and potentially releasing public information. The position requires a certified teacher or someone eligible for Rule 10 certification, successful completion of a criminal background check, and current CPR/AED certification.

Requirements

  • Certified teacher or qualify for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Current certification in CPR and AED.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community.
  • Ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (competition travel, meetings, practices, etc.) to ensure safety and adherence to district policies.
  • Maintain a variety of records, including physical exam forms, concussion forms, insurance waivers, medical releases, activity consent forms, tryout/participation agreements, emergency contact information, schedules, equipment inventory, game/student athlete statistics, squad rosters, etc.
  • Verify that all required forms and documentation are completed before any student is issued equipment or allowed to practice.
  • Ensure all transfer students meet KSHSAA eligibility requirements.
  • Ensure all participating students have purchased the required activity ticket.
  • Implement and manage practice schedules, facility usage, equipment use, and staff assignments, submitting schedules to administration.
  • Supervise practice sessions and maintain locker room security.
  • Report all participant injuries to proper school officials according to the coach's handbook and Board of Education policy.
  • Support and follow the recommendations of athletic trainers regarding student safety, injury, and participation.
  • Support and conform to established decisions and policies of the school and USD 500.
  • Organize a system for uniform and equipment checkout, maintain equipment inventory, enforce rules regarding equipment care, and ensure accountability at the end of the season.
  • Inform administration of equipment needs to maintain safety and performance.
  • Maintain records of evaluation procedures and assess student athletes for feedback and team placement.
  • Conduct and attend supporting activities such as league meetings, coaches meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets.
  • Develop team and individual practice regimes focusing on strength, speed, agility, nutrition, and injury prevention.
  • Evaluate facilities and playing fields for hazards and recommend modifications.
  • Oversee coaching personnel and student managers, providing direction and monitoring activities.
  • Guide coaching personnel in instructional techniques, practice organization, and supervision responsibilities.
  • Assign duties to coaching personnel and prepare written evaluations for each coach.
  • Advise coaching personnel, parents, and athletes on expectations of good sportsmanship and KSHSAA Rule 52.
  • Monitor student athlete academic eligibility according to KSHSAA and USD 500 policies.
  • Provide intervention (counseling, tutoring) for students needing assistance to maintain academic eligibility.
  • Report all team scores to appropriate media outlets and prepare public information releases (High School Only).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director.
