About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking a responsible and dedicated individual to serve as the MS Head Cheerleading Coach at Rosedale Middle School. This role is responsible for all levels and phases of the cheerleading sport, ensuring that all activities are conducted correctly and on schedule. The coach will enforce KSHSAA rules, supervise student athletes, maintain records, implement schedules, and oversee coaching personnel to foster a positive and safe environment for participants.

Requirements

  • Certified teacher or qualify for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Current certification in CPR and AED.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community.
  • Ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (competition travel, meetings, practices, etc.) to ensure activities are conducted in an environment with minimal risk of injury and in keeping with USD 500 Board of Education mission and policies.
  • Maintain a variety of records for compliance with district, athletic conference, state, and KSHSAA requirements (e.g., physical exams, concussion forms, insurance waivers, consent forms, emergency contacts, schedules, equipment inventory, statistics, rosters).
  • Verify that all necessary forms are completed before a candidate is issued equipment or allowed to practice.
  • Ensure all transfer students meet KSHSAA eligibility requirements prior to participation.
  • Ensure all participating students have purchased the required activity ticket.
  • Implement practice schedules and other schedules (e.g., facility usage, equipment, staff assignments), following all school and district policies for scheduling facilities and submitting schedules to administration.
  • Supervise practice sessions and maintain security of the locker room.
  • Report all injuries of participants to proper school officials, following the injury reporting policy.
  • Support and follow all athletic trainers and their recommendations regarding student safety, injury, and participation.
  • Support and conform to established decisions and policy decisions of a general nature that are in keeping with the established policies and procedures of the school and USD 500.
  • Organize a system for uniform and equipment checkout, maintain an accurate inventory of all equipment, enforce rules regarding care of equipment, and ensure all students are accountable at the conclusion of each season.
  • Inform administration of equipment needs to maintain safety and performance of student athletes.
  • Maintain records of evaluation procedures used in the selection process and assess student athletes for feedback on individual performance and/or team placement.
  • Conduct and attend a variety of supporting activities for the assigned sport (e.g., league meetings, coaches meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, banquets) to provide program information and recognize participants' accomplishments.
  • Develop team and individual practice regimes for student athletes (e.g., strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention) to enhance and improve their performance.
  • Evaluate facility and/or playing field for potential hazards, inadequate equipment, etc., to implement or assist in making modifications or recommendations that would reduce the risk of injury.
  • Oversee coaching personnel and student managers to provide direction and monitor activities.
  • Guide coaching personnel in instructional techniques, organization of practices, supervision guidelines, and responsibilities.
  • Assign duties to coaching personnel and prepare a written evaluation for each coach at the conclusion of the season.
  • Advise coaching personnel, parents, and athletes of expectations of good sportsmanship.
  • Ensure coaching staff, parents, and athletes understand the importance of KSHSAA Rule 52.
  • Monitor student athlete academic eligibility to comply with KSHSAA requirements and USD 500 Board of Education policy.
  • Provide appropriate intervention (e.g., counseling, tutoring) to students identified as needing assistance to maintain their academic eligibility.
  • Report all team scores to the appropriate media outlets for distribution and prepare other public information releases as needed (High School Only).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director.
