The MRI Technologist is responsible for examining requests and verifying orders on each assigned patient, referring and questioning orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam, and contacting the ordering provider when there are discrepancies. The technologist will properly identify patients using two identifiers, assist patients, and offer a brief explanation of the procedures. They will prepare patients for the procedure with a full explanation and document on appropriate worksheets. The role involves interviewing patients for a complete medical history, reviewing in-patients, ER, and outpatients EMR’s to obtain pertinent clinical history, and recording medical history on requisitions. The technologist will correlate other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed, and assume responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results. They will prepare and administer IV contrast according to departmental protocols and record contrast type and amount upon request. The technologist evaluates the technical quality of images, consults with a Radiologist if needed, recognizes abnormal anatomy, and processes any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed. Basic patient care functions are performed, informing appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient’s condition, initiating life support measures when necessary, and assisting in “code blue” procedures during medical emergencies. The technologist performs MRI scanning and assists Physicians/PA during invasive procedures, practicing proper sterile technique and adhering to bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies. They are authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner. Radiation safety principles are practiced for self, employees, patients, and family members, following appropriate radiation safety standards. Malfunctioning equipment is reported to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer. Knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease are maintained. Hospital fire and safety procedures are adhered to, and all in-service classes and required safety modules are completed. The radiology computer system is operated, including entering orders and charging procedures/supplies, and contrast administration is documented in the MAR. The assigned work area is maintained in a neat and orderly fashion, kept fully stocked, and cleaned to promote cleanliness. Assistance is provided to other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, when performing exams or services in conjunction with an MRI scan. Knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for both staff and patients while in and around magnetic fields is maintained.
