About The Position

VCU Tappahannock Hospital, a facility of VCU Health, is seeking an MRI Technologist for a 12-week temporary role. This position is crucial for providing high-quality diagnostic imaging services to patients of all ages in the Middle Peninsula region. The hospital is committed to excellence, affordability, and community impact, functioning as a vital healthcare hub with essential departments. The MRI Technologist will perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures, administer radiofrequencies within a magnetic field to produce images, ensure patient safety, maintain accurate documentation, and provide compassionate care.

Requirements

  • Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) as an MRI Technologist or equivalent.
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as an MRI Technologist.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture and IV access.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Current Certification by ARRT-MRI.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers).
  • One (1) year of previous MRI Technologist work experience.
  • Graduation from a JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology that is recognized by the ARRT; or Graduation from a JRCNMT accredited program in nuclear medicine technology.

Nice To Haves

  • One to three (1-3) years of previous MRI Technologist work experience.
  • Previous work experience in an academic medical center environment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Radiologic Technology or closely related field from an accredited program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform MRI procedures utilizing MRI scanners and power injectors.
  • Assess and monitor patient vital signs and take appropriate actions in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and MRI physics.
  • Maintain a high degree of accuracy in positioning and sequence techniques.
  • Serve as primary liaison between patients, licensed independent practitioners, and support team members.
  • Prepare, administer, and document medication activities in accordance with federal and state law.
  • Participate in quality improvement processes and continuous assessment of performance.
  • Engage in continuing education to enhance patient care and technical competence.
  • Apply principles of magnetic resonance safety to minimize risk to patients, self, and others.
  • Select appropriate pulse sequences and imaging protocols.
  • Document exam information in the medical record and maintain archival storage of imaging exams.
  • Assist licensed independent practitioners with specialized interventional MRI procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect established policy regarding patient records.
  • Provide patient education related to imaging procedures.
  • Educate and mentor students and other learners in the radiology environment.
  • Participate in ongoing quality assurance activities.
  • Independently performs or assists the licensed independent practitioner in the completion of all MRI imaging exams, interventional MRI procedures, and therapeutic MRI procedures utilizing all MRI scanners and associated technology on site at VCUHS.
  • Independently complete imaging exams based on physicians written order, department protocols, and institutional safety standards.
  • Evaluate and react to information contained on the MRI Safety Checklist as well as the MRI contrast checklist.
  • Prioritize workload based on ordered patient priority.
  • Represent the goals, values, and vision of VCU Health System.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory standards, health system and department policies, procedures, processes, and guidelines applicable to role.
  • Resolve basic service delivery issues.
  • Initiate equipment service calls.
