About The Position

The MRI Technologist Lead is responsible for the supervision of all services to meet department standards of care and/or respond to demand by the customer or referring physicians. This role involves monitoring technical competence of staff, resolving patient and physician complaints, managing staff schedules, critiquing student performance, issuing holiday schedules, assigning after-hours trauma call, maintaining records for the Quality Assurance program, reviewing patient schedules for satisfaction, responding to nursing units and outpatient scheduling regarding add-ons, and preparing and implementing employee training plans. The lead also orders and maintains department supplies, ensures equipment is clean and in working order, and performs diagnostic tests as a staff technologist when required. Additionally, the role focuses on developing and maintaining an environment conducive to employee satisfaction, including preparing orientation programs, developing training plans, participating in staff in-servicing, following up on suggestions to improve exam quality, adjusting staffing, approving hours worked, conducting staff meetings, preparing performance reviews, monitoring safety and maintenance of department areas and equipment, and working with other departments for complex exams. The lead is also responsible for ensuring equipment repairs and maintaining preventative maintenance schedules, assisting in negotiating service contracts, and reviewing service reports. Furthermore, the position assists in the development, interpretation, and monitoring of department policies, budgets, and strategic plans, and enforces hospital-wide policies. Maintaining technical, organizational, and communication skills, including attending classes and workshops, and utilizing CQI methods are essential. The lead also ensures compliance with Accrediting Organization and Department Safety standards, including radiation safety, disaster policies, and universal/infectious safety procedures, and monitors staff compliance with mandatory in-service programs and licensure/certification. Finally, the lead provides patient care specific to procedural requirements and patient needs, responds to complaints, coordinates multiple exams, maintains patient confidentiality, and provides transportation when needed.

Requirements

  • 3-4 years MRI tech experience
  • Graduate of approved Radiologic Technology program
  • Knowledge of MRI cross-sectional anatomy and physics
  • Familiar with MR equipment
  • Associates Degree in Health Science
  • Familiarity with MRI keyboard
  • Knowledge of hospital computer systems ARRT, IDNS, CPR
  • Available for on-call when necessary
  • Able to work changing schedules/additional hours to accomplish projects
  • Able to lift, push, or pull 50# with assistance
  • Good communication skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to anticipate patient, employee and Department needs and act upon accordingly

Responsibilities

  • Monitor technical competence of staff.
  • Respond to patient/physician complaints/concerns and resolve all issues quickly.
  • Scheduling of technical staff - approve vacation and time off and adjust schedule for call off or emergencies.
  • Critique students ability to work and adjust to departments.
  • Issue holiday schedules for technical staff.
  • Assign after hours trauma call to keep 24-hour coverage for all emergency patients (available call for MRI for cord compression).
  • Maintain records/statistics as directed by the Quality Assurance program.
  • Review schedules for patients to ensure customer satisfaction and respond to their expectations and needs. Modify schedules as needed.
  • On a daily basis, respond to nursing units and outpatient scheduling regarding add-ons and answer specific questions about preps and procedures.
  • Prepare and implement plan for employee training to ensure an adequate trained staff for all areas under this positions responsibility.
  • Order and maintain supplies for department to assure continuity in patient care. Determine inventory levels, prepare expense requisitions, and verify receipt of orders.
  • Make sure miscellaneous equipment is kept clean and in working order.
  • Perform exams in areas where licensure permits.
  • Ability to access vein for the purpose of injecting IV contrast.
  • Ability to recognize contraindications and adverse reaction to oral IV contrast.
  • Participate in call rotation as needed.
  • Provide for patient comfort and safety for all procedures.
  • Respond to patients’ questions pertaining to specific procedures.
  • Maintain a properly stocked and clean room.
  • Prepare orientation programs for new employees and determine competence to work independently.
  • Prepare plans for employee training to assure adequate man hours of trained staff in appropriate areas by way of cross-training and flexing manpower.
  • Participate in department in-servicing of staff related to technical, safety, or quality of care issues.
  • Follow-up on radiologists suggestions to improve quality of exams.
  • Adjust staffing according to patient volumes and short staffing (vacations, sick days). Make sure that after hours call is covered.
  • Check Tech Time and approve hours worked. Enter PTO, UPTO and other payroll issues as necessary.
  • Conduct and document monthly staff meeting, exchanging pertinent information with all associates.
  • Prepare associate performance reviews in a timely manner.
  • Monitor department areas of responsibility for safety and structural integrity.
  • Monitor overall maintenance and housekeeping for departments.
  • Work with other departments in scheduling complicated exams involving two or more departments.
  • Assure equipment repairs through appropriate Biomed Department, maintenance or OEM.
  • Monitor equipment for required service.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance schedule of equipment. Work with Biomed and service companies to set date and times for PM’s conducive with the operation of the MRI department.
  • Assist in negotiating service contracts that will have a minimal impact on patient care and financial expense to the department.
  • Review and sign service reports. Analyze equipment repairs and report discrepancies or trends in equipment malfunction to the director.
  • Review and update policy and procedure manuals for areas of responsibility. (review annually).
  • Assist in the development of department revenue, expense and manpower budgets.
  • Monitor financial performance or department and report variances from expected financial performance to director.
  • Assist in the development of Capital Equipment Plans and special projects.
  • Enforce policies both department and hospital wide.
  • Maintain technical expertise by attending classes, workshops, seminars and conferences. Remain knowledgeable by reading current literature and leading discussions or making presentations to staff.
  • Maintain good communication between all internal and external customers.
  • Utilize CQI methods of management.
  • Maintain and implement department safety standards.
  • Monitor compliance with radiation safety standards of practice.
  • Maintain staff knowledge of department code 10-2 policies and procedures.
  • Maintain staff knowledge of department Disaster, Fire and Safety policies.
  • Maintain staff knowledge and constant implementation of universal and infectious safety procedures.
  • Assign and monitor staff compliance with mandatory safety in-service programs.
  • Monitor, test, and document each associate in two areas of knowledge of evaluation time.
  • Make sure all associates have current licensure/certification.
  • Respond to patient/physician complaints quickly. Report complaints to appropriate director/supervisor.
  • Coordinate multiple exams between MRI and other departments.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in all areas including computer information, patient charts, and patient communications.
  • Maintain professional attitude toward patients and fellow employees.
  • Provide transportation when Patient Escort services are not available.
